Northrop Grumman Accepting Applications for TEAACH Summer Internship Program

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., June 2, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) is currently accepting applications for its inaugural Teachers and Engineers for Academic Achievement (TEAACH) internship program in Illinois, a two-day initiative to help equip teachers with the tools they need to integrate real-world science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) into their classroom instruction.

Middle-school math and science teachers are welcome to apply for the program at http://www.es.northropgrumman.com/community/teaach/illinois/application.html.

This year, one session will be offered July 29-30 at Northrop Grumman's facility at 600 Hicks Road in Rolling Meadows. Teachers will receive a $200 stipend for the two-day session. A maximum of 25 teachers will be accepted.

"The TEAACH program has enjoyed enthusiastic participation in several cities across the nation, and we are very excited about bringing it to a new Northrop Grumman location this year," said John Buckley, vice president of Engineering and Manufacturing, Central Region for Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector. "Promoting STEM during the formative middle-school years will help increase the emphasis on these important career fields so critical to our nation's economy and security."

During the two-day TEAACH program, teachers will learn how to integrate STEM concepts and applications into lesson plans and will be provided hands-on shadowing opportunities involving real-world engineering applications. Following the program, each teacher will share his or her experiences back in the classroom.

The program targets middle-school math and science teachers primarily because the United States is experiencing a shortage of college graduates in these disciplines, a development that bodes ill for the nation's industries that depend on talented engineers, scientists and mathematicians. Because studies have indicated most children make the decision to pursue math and science education and careers during middle-school, Northrop Grumman developed the TEAACH program to engage teachers, key influencers in the lives of students, during these crucial years.

"It's a privilege to offer teachers a chance to participate in a program where they can partner with a local business with the same vested interest in student development as their own," said Buckley. "This is a very different way to thank these teachers for all they do, and to help them bring some unique lessons into their classrooms."
