AMREL's OCU Solution at Robotics Rodeo

EL MONTE, CA--(Marketwire - August 18, 2009) - American Reliance Inc. (AMREL), developer of
rugged mobile computer solutions, will demonstrate its revolutionary
modular OCU solution at the Robotic Technology Observation, Demonstration
and Discussion (RTOD2). Staged by the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research,
Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and III Corp, the RTOD2 will be
held from August 31 to September 4 at the Robotics Rodeo in Ft. Hood,
Texas.
"We're very pleased to be invited," states Michael D. Castillo, Senior
Application Architect (Robotics) for AMREL. "It's a great opportunity to
show off our FLEXkit."
The FLEXkit is a modular solution that enables field personnel to quickly
put together OCUs as needed. By simply swapping radio control modules and
hard drives, one AMREL ROCKY computer can control a variety of robots, even
when they have diverse operating systems and different origins of
manufacture.
"While not a Common Operator Control Unit (COCU) by itself, it is a big
leap forward toward DOD's goal of interoperability," explains Mr. Castillo.
"Unlike all other existing OCUs, which are dedicated to a single robot,
this is the first solution that gives soldiers the ability to control
heterogeneous unmanned systems with a single device. It will immensely
simplify maintenance and logistics as well as enhance mission flexibility."
While FLEXkit's ability to control different kinds of robots will be
highlighted at Robotics Rodeo, it can also build non-OCU tools.
"We've already had inquires about biometric applications," reports Mr.
Castillo. "It can monitor sensors as well. It's simply a matter of properly
outfitting the modules."
Despite its extraordinary versatility, it is in the area of OCUs that the
FLEXkit is expected to make an immediate impact.
"A true COCU is years away," says Mr. Castillo. "System integrators and
robot manufactures don't have to wait for the future. We have a common
control solution for your unmanned system here and now."
