Versant Launches .NET Database Product

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Oct. 20, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Versant Corporation (Nasdaq:VSNT), an industry leader in specialized data management software, is pleased to announce a new addition to its Versant Object Database (VOD) product portfolio. VOD .NET is a dedicated object database system for the popular Microsoft .NET software development environment that assists application developers in creating data driven high performance applications for Windows, including Browser Based and Rich Internet Applications. VOD .NET significantly increases the developer agility when implementing complex, object-oriented data models while achieving in many cases at least 10 times the performance and scalability over traditional relational databases.

"VOD .NET is an important technological milestone for Versant," said Jochen Witte, CEO of Versant. "In general, object-oriented application development (OOAD) has matured over the past 10 years and is now considered 'main stream'. Microsoft is embracing OOAD with its latest .NET application framework, which includes new object-oriented programming interfaces for databases, most notably LINQ (Language INtegrated Query) and ADO.NET's Entity Framework. VOD .NET is fully integrated with ADO.NET and LINQ and may create exciting new opportunities and markets for the Versant Object Database by simplifying the adoption of an Entity Framework based approach to application development."

A Breakthrough in Developer Productivity and Database Performance for .NET

Application developers are using Microsoft's object oriented .NET framework to create sophisticated applications for complex markets including telecommunications, high performance computing, financial services and computer simulation. Increasingly complex data models are demanding higher performance and scalability from the database tier. Breaking up these complex data models into tables for SQL databases, while at the same time achieving performance and scalability requirements, has become a daunting task for the developer.

With VOD .NET, the developer can focus work efforts on the application and its domain model. VOD .NET handles the required persistence services, providing performance and scalability, while managing availability and demand requirements created by increasing concurrency and growing data volume. VOD .NET can reduce an average of 40% in program coding for the developer, and often performs 10 times faster than traditional database systems. The LINQ integration allows the programmer to develop the application and database entirely in a single type system, and Versant's Visual Studio support adds even more convenience and productivity to the development lifecycle.

"IdeaBlade's DevForce has long provided object-oriented persistence for .NET and now its Silverlight developers," said Albert Wang, CEO of IdeaBlade. "Traditional relational databases often struggle with the complex, hierarchical object graphs that the Versant Object Database can manage with speed and ease. Now our customers can create compelling, multi-tier applications built on a DevForce domain model backed by Versant's high performance object database."

About VOD .NET

VOD .NET is a software development kit for database applications for Windows and the Internet. VOD .NET is fully integrated with Microsoft development tools including Visual Studio and .NET 3.x. The software is available for all major Microsoft Windows platforms, including Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008. The VOD .NET pre-release is available immediately while the generally available version is scheduled for release later this year.
