Newmont Mining Powers 24/7 Gold Mining Operation With Exalt Microwave Backhaul Systems
200-Megabit Ethernet Microwave Radio Links Support Fault-Tolerant Dispatch and Control System for Global Gold Producer

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - January 19, 2010) - Exalt
Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul,
today announced that Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE : NEM ), one of the
world's leading gold producers, has deployed Exalt microwave radio systems
to support round-the-clock operations at its open pit gold mine near
Carlin, Nevada. This deployment follows other purchases of Exalt radio
systems for deployment at Newmont Mining operations in Australia, Ghana,
and Indonesia.
In this deployment, Newmont Mining worked with radio systems consultant KNS Communications
of Denver, Colorado, to plan and install Exalt split-mount and indoor
microwave radio systems. The Exalt systems provide a 200 megabit-per-second
Ethernet backbone that delivers
computer-aided dispatch, traffic management and inventory tracking
information to 2.4 GHz radio systems on board each of the 150+ trucks,
drills, shovels, loaders, and other equipment at the mine, which stretches
across 24 miles of the Carlin Trend.
"We run our operations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and our ability to
minimize downtime depends on making sure all of our equipment is being used
productively at all times," said Boyd Burden, senior communications
technician at Newmont Mining. "Exalt radio systems give us totally reliable
operation, and that helps us keep all of our equipment running at peak
efficiency."
Exalt split-mount radio
systems configured to use the 11 GHz frequency band are used to further
reduce the potential for interference in an area adjacent to another mine's
radio network. For the other links, the company opted for Exalt indoor radio
systems configured to use the 5.4 GHz frequency band. The radio hops
reach from seven to 10 miles each.
"Exalt microwave radio systems allow operators like Newmont Mining to
support mission-critical communications and information transport with
complete confidence," said Amir Zoufonoun,
president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "Our exclusive performance and
reliability features allow customers to use high-speed wireless
connectivity without the reliability and performance issues associated with
legacy microwave systems. Plus, our broad product portfolio provides
customers with the ultimate in flexibility to design and deploy a network
that meets their specific performance and TCO requirements."
All
Exalt radio systems offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed
throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in frequencies
from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 700 Mbps per
channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network
applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer
native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software
configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using
third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c
and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES
128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission.
To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an
embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
