Health Enhancement Products, Inc. Proceeds With Patent Filings for Newly Isolated and Previously Undiscovered Compounds Regulating Cholesterol Metabolism

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 22, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Health Enhancement Products, Inc. (OTCBB:HEPI) has filed a provisional patent application to protect biologically active molecules isolated from its ProAlgaZyme algae infusion. These previously undiscovered molecules have been mapped against available databases and are known to be responsible for the dramatic cholesterol regulation effects published in the summer of 2009, whereby LDL cholesterol levels were lowered and HDL cholesterol levels raised in a hamster study conducted at Wayne State University's department of Nutrition and Food Science, under the direction of Dr. Smiti Gupta.

The Company has previously marketed ProAlgaZyme (PAZ) as a standalone product, and now intends to develop a variety of derivatives for a broader range of applications. HEPI recently retained the services of Kohn & Associates, Inc., the noted biotech patent law firm, to begin a comprehensive program of new patent filings as a result of the research work conducted over the past several months.

The Company anticipates filing additional patents as soon as practical, at which time the Company will have the ability to legally disclose the identification of the cholesterol mechanisms and describe the isolated compounds affecting these mechanisms.

In addition, the Company announced that its research efforts had recently expanded to include faculty and independent researchers associated with SUNY- Buffalo, Vanderbilt University and Bruker Analytical Services, among others, as various experts probed cholesterol metabolism, molecular structure and genetic mechanisms at the cellular level.

"The nature of biological research can be both frustrating and exhilarating, I am thrilled to say today HEPI reached an important milestone in its history," stated John Gorman, director of sales and a board member. "Years of research and analysis of the proper mechanisms of PAZ have led us to today's developments. Today's announcement has now allowed us to pursue numerous opportunities we were not able to follow before we filed these patents. We look forward to updating the investment community as we are able to announce further developments on monetizing our valuable asset."
