LOS ANGELES, March 23, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. local time, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) facilities nationwide will take part in Earth Hour, an event promoting global awareness of climate change. Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour asks individuals, businesses and government leaders to turn off all non-essential lighting for one hour as a statement of concern about climate change.
In 2009, nearly one billion people from 4,100 cities in 87 countries turned off their lights, including lighting for international landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower and Great Pyramids, and the city skylines of Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Tel Aviv. In 2010, more than 1,500 cities are expected to participate. In the U.S., twenty-five states and many local cities with Northrop Grumman facilities are also actively involved in Earth Hour.
For Earth Hour, the company will be shutting off many of its large building signs and turning off the power at various facilities nation-wide. The company is also encouraging its employees to participate in the event by turning off office lights and unplug non-essential equipment before leaving their workplace on Friday, March 26, and by turning off their home lighting for Earth Hour.
