DRAPER, UT--(Marketwire - March 29, 2010) - With as many as 40 percent of surgical patients testing positive for blood-borne pathogens1 and 20 percent of O.R. sharps injuries caused by scalpels2, there is a bon-a-fide need to reduce and/or eliminate the use of scalpels in the O.R. To help prevent scalpel injuries, Megadyne introduces the new electrosurgical ACE Cutting System.
The ACE Blade™ and ACE mode of the Mega Power™ electrosurgical generator is all that is needed to cut, coagulate and dissect tissue. This innovative technology significantly reduces the need to pass scalpels and conventional electrosurgical instruments back and forth. By reducing the number of instrument exchanges, the risk of sharps injuries to the surgical team can be reduced and valuable operating room time saved.
"A majority of scalpel injuries in the O.R. are incurred by surgeons and nurses when instruments are passed back and forth," said Michael Hintze, Vice President of Marketing at Megadyne. "Understanding the risks of the OR environment, we set out to develop a tool that would perform as well as a scalpel and reduce the potential for sharps injuries. The result is our ACE Cutting System, an effective and safe instrument for patients, surgeons and nurses. It is ALWAYS sharp without having a razor's edge."
The ACE Blade is used with the ACE mode of the Mega Power electrosurgical generator. The generator automatically adjusts the power to the ACE Blade to provide a smooth consistent feel and minimal thermal necrosis. As a result of this innovative technology no power adjustments are required to be made by the Circulating Nurse and wound healing is equivalent to that obtained by a scalpel.
Because the blade is coated in Megadyne's proprietary E-Z Clean® PTFE non-stick coating eschar buildup is reduced, which also saves time during procedures. The Mega Power is a full-featured electrosurgical generator with cut, coag and bipolar capabilities for general electrosurgical use.
ACE Blade electrodes are available in 2.75 inch; 4.0 inch and 6.5 inch lengths and pre-loaded into Megadyne's electrosurgical pencils.
