L.A. Coalition Names New Executive Director

LOS ANGELES, April 28, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Los Angeles Coalition for the Economy & Jobs today announced that former Boeing Company executive Michael Kelly has been named to serve as its executive director.

The coalition is a newly formed alliance of Los Angeles' top leaders from business, labor, academic and non-profit sectors. Its members advocate measures that help ensure economic growth and the creation and retention of quality jobs in the Los Angeles region. The coalition is chaired by Russell Goldsmith, chairman and CEO of City National Bank.

Until recently, Kelly was manager of California Government Relations for the Boeing Company in Seal Beach, Calif. Starting today, he will take responsibility for the Los Angeles Coalition's day-to-day activities, advancing its charter, expanding its membership and building upon its strategy to attract and retain local job-creating investment.

"Michael is an experienced advocate who understands California's economy and knows how to build constructive partnerships between leaders from the business, government, labor, education and non-profit communities," Goldsmith said.

Kelly joined Boeing in 2006. For five years before that, he was deputy director of the California Film Commission.

From 1999 to 2001, he served in the office of former California Governor Gray Davis, first as a special assistant and then as deputy cabinet secretary.

Kelly graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1993 and went on to earn a master's degree in public administration from USC in 2004.

The Los Angeles Coalition was created following the release of a 2008 report by the Los Angeles Economy & Jobs Committee, which also was chaired by Goldsmith on behalf of L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The report -- Building a World-Class City for the 21st Century -- set forth 100 recommendations aimed at encouraging economic development and quality job creation in America's second largest city. The L.A. Coalition is dedicated, in part, to the implementation of those recommendations.
