PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - May 13, 2010) - SCOPE Alliance, an association of leading Network Equipment Providers (NEPs), hosted its "Cloud Computing in Telecom" member workshop last week at the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Executive presenters from SCOPE Alliance member companies as well as guest companies offered a variety of industry expert perspectives on the emergence of the network cloud. They examined the usefulness of virtualization in cloud computing, cloud computing security, and more, with the goal of helping service providers gain more business from their networks by using cloud computing. The strategies discussed ranged from offering SaaS as a new revenue source to developing a network that utilizes the cloud for improved content and services at a reduced system cost.
Workshop attendees discussed at length several key attributes of carrier grade-based cloud computing, including service level agreements (SLAs), performance, and security. Virtualization was a focal point during all discussions.
"Cloud propositions are business opportunities rather than technology, but virtualization is a key component of cloud computing that deserves the extensive attention it received during the workshop," said SCOPE Alliance marketing officer, Chris Wardale.
Workshop panel session attendees concluded that cloud computing use case scenarios must be identified prior to addressing the key issues that service providers may have when implementing cloud computing in telecom.
"We made some headway towards defining the landscape during this workshop, and we set the stage for ongoing discussion among industry leaders -- the members of SCOPE Alliance," said SCOPE Alliance Board of Directors' Chairperson Leslie Guth. "We look forward to continuing to explore the opportunities that cloud computing can offer service providers."
