NEWTON, MA--(Marketwire - June 14, 2010) - Over 4,000 engineers, scientists and industry professionals from around the world gathered at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL last week for the Sensors Expo & Conference, the leading event in North America focused exclusively on sensors and sensor-integrated systems. The Expo and Conference was held Monday, June 7 through Wednesday, June 9 and was co-located with ESC Chicago.
"We had a very successful event with energy harvesting, MEMS-based system solutions, data acquisition and wireless networking taking center stage in the conference sessions and throughout the Expo Hall," commented Beth Torrey, event director, Sensors Expo & Conference. "Our goal is to produce an event to help our attendees find solutions to their present sensing challenges while preparing them for the future. The co-location with the Embedded Systems Conference was extremely well received by both the attendees and exhibitors and we look forward to bringing this leading industry event back to Rosemont in June 2011 and again co-locate with ESC."
During the opening day keynote presentation, Ronald Mallet, Professor of Theoretical Physics, University of Connecticut presented his mission to make time travel a reality in front of a packed audience. Professor Mallet discussed how his work with Einstein's theories of relativity and space-time has led to the discovery that a circulating beam of light can make time travel a reality by dragging time into a closed loop. Following his presentation, Professor Mallet met with attendees on the show floor and further discussed his book Time Traveler which is being made into a major motion picture directed by Spike Lee.
On Wednesday morning, Wade Patterson, Founder, President & CEO, Synapse Wireless, Inc. presented Machines That Tweet. Mr. Patterson explained, "Over the last century people have found ways to talk to each other, computers have found a way to talk to each other and now we are focused on finding ways for machines to talk to each other. In fact, we are ten years into a long term process of networking machines for cost and energy savings."
Sensors offered four pre-conference symposia on Monday, June 7th with full-day sessions focused on Data Acquisition Systems, The Realities of Satellite & Cellular for Sensor Networking, Power Management: Energy Harvesting & Storage, and Think Outside the Chip: MEMS-Based System Solutions. The conference program offered 40 technical conference sessions and eight tracks providing engineers from a variety of vertical industries and technical disciplines with a wealth of new ideas and practical approaches to measurement, monitoring, detection and control.
On the Show floor, there were over 140 exhibiting companies, which also featured 46 new exhibitors; and the overall consensus from the exhibitors was that the event attracted a very strong and qualified audience of sensing technology buyers. Many of the exhibitors were also pleased to see attendees from the embedded systems industry.
"A spectacular show," said Daniel Marriott, President of Spectra Symbol. "Within the first three hours of the show, we had met with hundreds of top notch engineers. It has been the highest quality show of the decade for our linear position sensor technology."
"We consider the Sensors Expo & Conference an important venue for meeting new customers and maintaining relationships with existing ones. At this year's show, the booth traffic was strong and the request for follow up higher than in past years," said Joe Morrill, PCB Piezotronics.
"This year's Sensors Expo & Conference has been a great opportunity to display our new products and engage with engineers and future customers. Having been a long time, continuous exhibitor at Sensors Expo, we are exceedingly pleased with the connections and qualified leads," commented Rebecca Corneau, MicroStrain.
The Sensors 2010 "Best of Sensors Expo Awards" were presented to exhibitors by Melanie Martella, Executive Editor of Sensors. Gold Award Winners were Cymbet Corp, Diversified Technical Systems, PCB Piezotronics, Inc., and Yokogawa Corp. Silver Award Winners were Analog Devices, MicroStrain, Inc., and FLIR Systems. Bronze Awards Winners were Arveni, Intex, Inc., and Libelium. Honorable Mention awards were presented to Micro-Hybrid GmbH and Perpetuum Ltd. "It is truly an honor to receive the Best of Sensors Expo Award and we appreciate the exposure and attention Cymbet receives from this," said Blair Wilson, Vice President of Sales for Cymbet Corporation.
Show floor highlights included demonstrations by FIRST Robotics Students, a visit from Rosemont Mayor Bradley Stephens, presentations in the Application Showcase Theater, and several exhibitor giveaways. In the Application Showcase Theater, free educational sessions were presented to standing room only crowds. Presenters represented mPhase, Perpetuum, Epson Toyocom, MicroStrain, PCB Piezotronics, Advanced Cerametrics Inc., Cymbet Corp, North Pole Engineering, Synapse and Roving Networks. The Application Showcase Theater was located in The Energy Harvesting Pavilion, which featured vendors that provide Energy Harvesting & Power Management solutions capable of capturing, converting, storing and delivering energy in a form that can be used to provide the power needed by the system it serves.
