MONCTON, New Brunswick, July 19, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mondo, a global leader in the sports flooring market, will play a key role in the largest sporting event ever to be held in Atlantic Canada. The 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships will bring more than 1,400 of the world's best junior athletes representing 170 member federations to Moncton to compete in 44 medal events.
The track and field competition will be held July 19–25 at the new Moncton 2010 Stadium, which was designed to be a world-class venue, right down to its state-of-the-art track: Mondotrack, the track of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics.
The 10,000-seat Moncton 2010 Stadium sits on the campus of the Université de Moncton. It was built especially for the World Junior Championships, but it is capable of being expanded to 20,000 seats for future sports and entertainment events. Construction began in spring 2008, and Mondotrack was installed for the 400-meter, eight-lane track and warm-up area during summer 2009.
Mondotrack, Mondo's newest track, was designed to provide optimal traction and a greater contact area than other tracks. It converts the greatest amount of force generated by athletes' foot strikes to energy for highest energy return, which helps athletes achieve faster times compared to running on other surfaces. Mondotrack also provides excellent athletic comfort and maximum safety with the optimum blend of speed and comfort to accommodate both high-level competition and training venues.
More than 230 world records have been set on Mondo tracks, including five at the 2008 Olympics.
