CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - August 25, 2010) - Exalt Communications today announced that Northeast Missouri Electric Power Cooperative (Northeast Missouri EPC) has deployed Exalt advanced microwave backhaul systems to support both TDM and Ethernet traffic in its evolving network. The Exalt systems now carry SCADA traffic for power generation and transmission facilities as well as IP voice, video surveillance traffic, and data for customer information systems operated by Northeast Missouri EPC's eight member cooperatives.
A long-time user of microwave technology, Northeast Missouri EPC serves 21 counties in northeastern Missouri and southeastern Iowa. The company selected Exalt systems because they uniquely deliver the native TDM and Ethernet capabilities that allow Northeast Missouri EPC the flexibility, high performance, and reliability to build on existing TDM infrastructure investments while they transition to IP and prepare to support new initiatives such as SmartGrid.
"We have been migrating away from T1 lines since 2007, and we needed microwave backhaul systems that can support both TDM and Ethernet," said Jack Elmore, communications manager at Northeast Missouri EPC. "The Exalt systems support both types of traffic natively, and they have made it very easy for us to move away from T1 lines. We now carry T1 traffic on only two of our microwave links, and we expect to turn that off soon."
Like other power generation and transmission companies around the nation, Northeast Missouri EPC is constantly seeking higher efficiency as it serves local utilities. With its member cooperatives now deploying smart meters and other technologies that require high-performance Ethernet networking, Northeast Missouri EPC has had to evolve its network from T1-based to Ethernet. The Exalt systems have made this an easy transition.
"With native TDM, native Ethernet, and mission-critical reliability built into every Exalt microwave backhaul system, we enable companies like Northeast Missouri EPC to leverage their investments in TDM infrastructure while they migrate to IP," said Amir Zoufonoun, CEO of Exalt Communications. "This pay-as-you-grow functionality is invaluable to any utility that wants to minimize the costs, business disruptions, and support challenges that are typical when migrating to new technology."
The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems -- indoor, outdoor, and split-mount -- offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
