The Ensemble Theatre Kicks Off New Season With Laughs in 'The Waiting Room'

HOUSTON, Sept. 1, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Who/What:

The Ensemble Theatre kicks off its 2010-2011 Season with 'The Waiting Room,' comedy written by playwright Samm-Art Williams and directed by Ensemble Theatre Artistic Director Eileen J. Morris. Williams has received several award nominations in recognition of his writing abilities including: a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and two Emmy Awards. In addition to his stage credits, Williams has written for popular television sitcoms Cagney and Lacey, Miami Vice, Martin, and The Fresh Prince of Bellaire.

Laughs fly furiously in the most unlikely setting: a hospital waiting room where friends and family gather to learn the fate of patriarch Pullen Innes, who has just fallen ill. Facing mortality has compelled many to "get right" with God, yet the temptation to "backslide" is omnipresent. The Innes family struggles to maintain their decorum and the sanctity of their family when a shocking secret is revealed. This funny and ironic test of faith almost makes them forget their reason for being at the hospital in the first place. Their lives will never be the same!

The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and to enlighten, entertain, and enrich a diverse community. Thirty-four years later, the theatre has evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of Mr. Hawkins' car to being one of Houston's finest historical cultural institutions. The Ensemble is one of a few professional theatres in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience. The oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, it holds the distinction of being one of the nation's largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house. Board President Emeritus Audrey Lawson led the capital campaign for The Ensemble's $4.5 million building renovations that concluded in 1997. The Ensemble Theatre has fulfilled and surpassed the vision of its founder and continues to expand and create innovative programs to bring African American theatre to a myriad of audiences.
