Bob Cutler, CEO of Creative Consumer Concepts (C3), said that the federal government should not be able to limit the rights of advertisers, consumers or anyone who wants to choose what they want to eat. "The U.S. government is marching again to restrict our rights. These subpoenas are a sure way for the government to restrict advertisers. The result of this effort will undoubtedly be government intervention and potential regulation," he said.
Cutler added that Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) tried to introduce legislation this year to limit tax deductions for companies marketing to children. "Now, the U.S. government is subpoenaing companies that market to kids and adolescents. The fight to limit consumer choice is on. Now, we should consider electing individuals who want consumer freedom, not elected officials and political figures who want to trample our rights. It's too bad the government is not willing to work on the issues that will matter in time, such as our freedom," said Cutler.
According to a recent article on AdAge.com (http://adage.com/article?article_id=145675), the subpoenas were handed out to prepare for the FTC's follow-up to its 120-page report issued in 2008. Three years after initially delivering what is technically known as, "orders to file special report" to 44 marketers, the FTC issued subpoenas to 48 companies in order to prepare a follow-up to its report, "Marketing Food to Children and Adolescents: A Review of Industry Expenditures, Activities and Self-Regulation."
