KEMA IEC 61850 Training: Insight Into Efficient, Reliable Utility Data Transfer

Advancing Utility Understanding of Standardized Communication Benefits

BURLINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - September 22, 2010) -  In the United States, electric utility equipment manufacturers are making products IEC 61850-ready, but most utilities have yet to standardize on this data communications protocol. KEMA is hosting a one-day overview of IEC 61850 to cover the fundamentals and highlight operational and cost advantages.

The course will be held September 29, 2010, at the Embassy Suites in Raleigh, N.C., and is considered an important addition to the KEMA Academy curriculum. KEMA Academy offers a wide range of courses that cover the spectrum of the electricity and gas energy supply chains.

"IEC 61850 data communications protocol is the NIST standard for smart grid interoperability," said Ron Willoughby, vice president, KEMA, Inc. "We've designed our IEC 61850 course based on experience gained from working with utilities on system protection, control, and automation issues. The training offers insight on the features of IEC 61850 and how standardized communication can be used to reduce the costs of data transfer while achieving operational objectives."

Developed out of UCA® (Utility Communications Architecture), IEC 61850 applies to utility data communications digitally transmitted among metering, protection, control, transformers, and switching devices within and between substations. It is a standard language that enables vendors to produce interoperable plug-and-play equipment. KEMA is authorized by the UCA International Users Group to perform IEC 61850 Conformance Testing in accordance with the Quality Assurance Testing Program Procedures.

The course is designed for industry professionals engaged in defining communication requirements, developing long-term strategies, and managing assets. Participants will gain:

  • An overview of the scope, objective, capabilities, and benefits of IEC 61850
  • An understanding of the fundamental issues and methodology for practical implementation
  • A foundation to present the benefits to stakeholders
  • An appreciation for recent developments, practical experiences, pitfalls, and guidelines important for successful implementation.
