TEMPE, AZ--(Marketwire - September 29, 2010) - After three semesters of long nights editing, dancing around green screen constraints and perfecting digital effects, the work of 31 students at the University of Advancing Technology (UAT) finally paid off. Last Friday, their 16-minute sci-fi, action movie, "Fallout" had a special showing for UAT and the community. Andrew Bortniak, a 3D modeler, was at the pre-screening. "The models they used were very impressive. Being a modeler myself... I couldn't tell the difference between some of the stuff they had done and full-quality, big-budget movies," said Bortniak.
Filming the 16-minute production, however, was no easy task considering all but one shot was captured within a green screen room at UAT. Digital Video professor and director Paul DeNigris commented on the challenges of filming with a blank background, imagined environments and continuous camera movement, "We end up doing this dance every time we do our turnarounds and basically spin the entire room around the camera, which is the total opposite of how you would do it on location."
The sets' physical challenges, however, allowed the team to display their competence for post production. From the photo-manipulation of the decrepit "Welcome to Phoenix" sign, to the computer-generated drop ship; the detailed imagery seen throughout the battle scenes in "Fallout" is a testament to the team's aptitude for computer-generated visual effects, texturing and compositing. "The whole thing wasn't so much about the outcome as it was about the process. It's a tremendous achievement for the students that were involved, and it's a great piece for their portfolio," DeNigris mentioned.
The short is quickly gaining popularity as it has already been selected for the 2010 International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival. "Fallout" will be featured during two different screening times on October 15th and 17th, both will be open to the public. Following the premiere, the movie will be released on DVD and Blu-ray.
