JDSU has committed more than $20 million to the facility that includes a staff of over 50 employees and the capacity to grow to more than 100 employees. The site also includes new, state-of-the-art optical coating equipment. Joining major sites in Beijing, Shenzhen, Singapore, Tokyo and Penang, the Suzhou site provides JDSU with another base to expand its relationships with Asia-based customers and suppliers.

In addition to the Suzhou site, JDSU has another optical coatings facility in Santa Rosa, California with more than 300 employees that handle manufacturing, research and development, sales and marketing.

JDSU has been creating optical coatings technology for over 60 years and is the largest producer worldwide. The technology is used in a wide variety of industries including aerospace, consumer electronics and instrumentation.
In 2009, JDSU announced that it provides optical coatings to filter different wavelengths of light for 3D glasses and projector wheels used in 3D cinema applications. In 2010, JDSU announced that it provides special coating technology for optical sensors used in gesture recognition platforms that allow a person's movements to control technology without the use of a remote or mouse.
The optical coatings are also used for theater projection and for sensing applications.
