NeighborWorks to Launch Five New E-Learning Courses in 2011

Currently Offering Two Courses for Free Through March 15, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - November 19, 2010) - Today NeighborWorks America, the nation's leading trainer of community development professionals, announced that it intends to add five new e-learning courses to its roster of courses offered through the NeighborWorks online learning center in 2011.

An increasingly robust online learning center comes at a time when nonprofit organizations need access to online education opportunities most. In the current economic climate, nonprofits are stretched past capacity and doing more with less as they work with decreased budgets and an increased demand on their time. Additionally, many nonprofit organizations are working to reduce their carbon footprint in an effort to green their organizations. E-learning courses provide an opportunity for nonprofits to save "green," and be "green."

"NeighborWorks' online learning center offers nonprofit professionals the opportunity to participate in NeighborWorks' renowned training program conveniently from their home or office. E-learning courses equip nonprofit professionals with the latest information on foreclosure counseling, homeownership and community lending, community stabilization, and asset management so they can hit the ground running without having to leave their communities -- saving time and travel expenses, while also creating healthier communities by reducing their organization's carbon footprint," said Ken Wade, CEO of NeighborWorks America.

The new e-learning courses that will be offered in 2011 include:

  • The Nuts and Bolts of Credit Counseling
  • Counseling Clients to Maximize Energy Savings
  • Home Equity Conversion Mortgage Exam Preparation
  • Fundamentals of Affordable Housing

Since NeighborWorks launched its online learning center in May 2008, more than 7,000 e-learning training certificates have been earned by affordable housing and community development professionals. NeighborWorks expects the demand for online learning to increase next year and estimates an additional 3,000 course certificates of completion will be earned in 2011.

E-learning courses not only save time and money for nonprofit professionals, they also help to reduce the carbon footprint of participating nonprofits. The average air travel mileage saved for each e-learning course is 1,000 miles. For each completed course to date, 7,000,000 air travel miles were saved. And with each 1,000 air travel miles accounting for .21 tons of carbon, the 7,000 e-learning certificates of completion have reduced the carbon footprint of the participating nonprofits by a combined 1,470 tons.

Finally, recognizing that many nonprofits' budgets are constrained during the recession yet the need for education has only increased, NeighborWorks is currently offering two e-learning courses for free to community development professionals through March 15, 2011:

  • Counseling Buyers of Real Estate Owned (REO) Properties
  • Counseling Clients Seeking Rental Housing
