BERLIN--(Marketwire - December 1, 2010) - SoundCloud, the audio platform that enables everybody to upload, promote and share the sounds they create across the web, has today announced significant new developments aimed at better serving its growing community of more than two million sound creators.
For the first time, users are now able to instantly record audio to their SoundCloud profile from an easy to use "record" button. Accessible via the website or SoundCloud app for iPhone, the new feature enables anyone to capture sound on the move and then, in the embeddable waveform player, share it anywhere -- across their social networks, websites, SoundCloud community or simply between friends.
To further enable easy audio creation, SoundCloud also announces the upgrade of its iPhone application, which has become available for free to all users. The app includes the ability to instantly record and upload, as well as the option to add an image and location to accompany the sound. Since becoming available in the App Store a year ago, the app has been downloaded more than 60,000 times.
Alexander Ljung, CEO and founder of SoundCloud, said: "These developments are a reflection of the rapidly emerging community of creators who are now using a wide range of sound as a way of positively expressing themselves. SoundCloud gives them the platform to create and share anything from personal audio messages and blogs, to poetry, comedy and the sounds of the world around them.
"Whilst we remain totally committed to our strong music community, we also want to encourage and nurture these new creators. We see a future where people are capturing and sharing sound in the same way they might think to take a photo or video to record and share something visual."
Since launching in 2008, SoundCloud has been largely embraced by the music industry, with artists as diverse as Kylie, Deadmau5, Moby and Caribou using it to upload, promote and share music. But more recently, the same functionality has been applied to a far wider range of sound creation, including: Tyler and Tara, a couple cycling round the world and sharing the meaningful sounds of their journey; the Royal Society of Literature who upload and share all of their lectures; and Suna and Joop, who give other people the chance to learn from their weekly Korean lessons.
As the number of users continues to grow exponentially, SoundCloud is regularly introducing product innovations and improving features to ensure the best possible sound experience. Most recently, these have included:
- A new App Gallery with over 100 applications for mobile, desktop and the web all built on SoundCloud's platform and available for anyone to create, find and share their sounds from anywhere
- A redesigned Dashboard making it faster, easier and more customisable for any user to see what's going on with their sounds, sounds sent directly to them or those from people they follow
- The Sharing Note which enables people to make the sounds they share more personal by adding a short message alongside every track (by email, social network or on SoundCloud)
- A new upload interface to make it simpler and speedier to get sounds into the 'Cloud and also get more feedback on the status of the upload with the transcoding process now included
Notes to Editors:
SoundCloud is based on a freemium business model, with users choosing between a range of accounts depending on their requirements. The free account includes 120 minutes of continuous audio time, the ability to share your sounds both publicly and privately, plus a distinctive waveform player to embed anywhere across the web.
