CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - December 7, 2010) - Exalt Communications today announced that Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), the largest electric power distributor in Nebraska, is deploying Exalt microwave backhaul systems to upgrade its legacy network of analog microwave radios. This move enables NPPD to handle rapidly increasing Ethernet traffic and to prepare for future initiatives such as SmartGrid.
NPPD, with a chartered territory including all or parts of 91 of Nebraska's 93 counties, delivers power to one million Nebraskans and has operated a statewide microwave network for 30 years. The NPPD microwave network connects power plants, substations, control facilities, local utility offices, and its main office, using wireless hops up to 30 miles long. For the past several years, NPPD has experienced rising demand for Ethernet traffic and IP-based applications on its network, and sought a way to move toward a digital/IP network base.
"Our intention was to upgrade our analog microwave systems so we could handle more Ethernet traffic and prepare for future IP applications," said Bill Hardy, telecommunications engineer at NPPD. "Most of our traffic is on Ethernet and native TDM, and our goal is migrate to IP at our own pace without disrupting our TDM traffic."
The Exalt systems deployed by NPPD carry either 4 or 8 T1 lines, with Ethernet as needed. In the future, NPPD will migrate to IP as it completes a system-wide upgrade of its legacy microwave systems with new systems from Exalt.
"Our unique ability to cost effectively support low-latency native TDM and native Ethernet traffic simultaneously on the same link makes Exalt systems particularly attractive solutions for the nation's public utility companies, which still use a great amount of TDM," said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "Exalt provides the industry's broadest range of microwave backhaul systems that can be added seamlessly into existing networks without disrupting native TDM traffic, and then migrated to IP unobtrusively at the operator's own pace. This has made us the first choice among utility cooperatives, as well as other commercial and government customers."
The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 43 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
