PC Market Sales Continue Upward Momentum Through IT Distributors

Global Technology Distribution Council Says "Bellwether Categories" Have Steadily Rebounded in U.S. and Europe

ST. PETERSBURG, FL--(Marketwire - December 7, 2010) - PC market sales growth through distributors continues to reflect strengthening overall technology industry demand conditions, according to the Global Technology Distribution Council (GTDC), whose members generate more than $100 billion in annual worldwide IT sales. The GTDC, which conducts extensive analysis of actual distributor sales-out data captured in the NPD Group Distributor Track (U.S.) and Context SalesWatch (Europe), announced that these distribution industry databases reflect year-over-year PC category sales increasing 17.5% in the U.S. and 22% in Europe on a year-over-year basis for the third quarter ended September 30, 2010.

"We are seeing bellwether categories like PCs and notebooks return to peak levels achieved prior to when the industry downturn occurred," commented GTDC CEO Tim Curran. "Many vendors have now turned the corner with their distribution partners. Lenovo, for instance, appears to have gained back its 'mojo' -- ascending in Q3 to the top position in the U.S. notebook distribution market, while generating the highest year-over-year growth in the broader PC distribution category. The PC 'refresh' in corporate environments has been a key factor for overall category growth, along with consumers continuing their hearty appetite for mobile solutions, boosting notebooks and other mobile computing sales."

PC category trends in Europe, as tracked by Context SalesWatch, revealed that 34% of all PCs shipped by vendors reached the market via distribution in Q3 2010, up from 29.9% in Q3 2009.

Bob Dutkowsky, CEO of Tech Data Corporation and newly appointed chairman of the GTDC, cited strong growth across numerous product categories during the distributor's recent Q3 earnings call. LED and LCD high-definition displays and televisions, along with desktops, servers, and tablets, were among the fastest-growing products for Tech Data in the Americas. "We also experienced considerably better demand than expected in the European market -- with sales of desktops and a wide array of mobility products, including tablets, on the rise."
