Sligro Food Group Selects Descartes' Excise Movement & Control System (EMCS) Solution

Multi-Country Solution Manages EMCS Arrival and Departure Filings Between EU Member States

WATERLOO, Ontario and HOOFDDORP, Netherlands, Dec. 16, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Descartes Systems Group (TSX:DSG) (Nasdaq:DSGX) announced that Sligro Food Group has selected Descartes' Excise Movement & Control System (EMCS) solution to manage electronic declarations for excise shipments. Descartes' EMCS declaration module is part of the Standard Declarations Framework which is a European filings solution that handles the electronic submission and receipt of declarations for excise shipments.

As part of the Multi Annual Strategic Plan (MASP) program to implement electronic customs in the European Union (EU), the European government introduced EMCS, a computerized system for monitoring movements of excise goods which have not yet been released for consumption. As of January 1, 2011, information on shipments between different Member States must be filed electronically by EMCS standards.

One Solution for Compliance for EU Excise Goods Operations

Sligro Food Group encompasses food retail and foodservice companies selling directly and indirectly to the entire Dutch food and beverages market. The group is active in foodservice as a wholesaler and in food retail as a wholesaler and retailer. The wide product range of 60,000 items includes long-life and short-life perishables, frozen foods, wines and spirits and food-related non-food items.

Sligro Food Group selected Descartes' EMCS declaration module to help it comply with the European Union (EU) regulations on movements of excise goods between EU Member States and within the Netherlands under duty suspension. Sligro Food Group needed one solution that could manage both arrival and departure filings for excise goods for multiple EU member states. Descartes' EMCS declaration module enables multi-country filings and offers numerous additional features that maximize the return on investment:

  • Descartes' EMCS declaration module is an easily-deployed On-Demand solution operated and controlled by Sligro's personnel from a centralized location, enabling compliance in all EU Member States;
  • The EMCS module integrates seamlessly with Sligro's existing environment enabling a full view on Sligro Food Group's excise operations and simplifying accurate follow-up of each declaration; and
  • One solution, as opposed to different applications, to cover multi-country filings, allowing for a more efficient process.

"By using one integrated solution to manage EMCS filings for multiple countries, we can cope with the changed requirements of the completion of the excise declaration process," said Alex Manders, Head of ICT Management at Sligro Food Group. "In addition, Descartes' EMCS solution easily integrates with our back-office system, allowing us to simply re-use data and significantly reduce the risk of error."

Jonathan Wasserman, Senior Vice President, Global Trade Compliance Solutions at Descartes comments, "Our goal at Descartes is to help our customers comply with EU customs regulations and to deliver fast time-to-value to our customers with a solution that reduces costs and increases productivity and efficiency at the same time."

Global Logistics Network Exchanges Information and Maximizes Collaboration

Descartes' EMCS solution leverages the power of Descartes' Global Logistics Network (GLN). Descartes' GLN enables transportation providers to connect to their trading partners and regulatory organizations and reliably exchange information to increase performance and drive high levels of customer satisfaction.
