AUSTIN, Texas, March 1, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energy Xtreme's new U36 Crossover system is providing reliable, emission-free energy to power the hydraulic lifts of bucket trucks that are commonly used by municipal, telecom, cable and utility fleets to repair electricity and phone lines, trim trees or rescue the occasional cat.
The lightweight U36 Crossover is the third product in the company's utility series line of products. The U36 can be factory integrated onto new vehicles or retrofitted onto vehicles already in use and provides energy to power hydraulic booms and bucket truck equipment on vehicles that service electricity transmission lines and telecommunications systems. It can run the vehicle's auxiliary electrical equipment, tools, motors, pumps, hydraulic booms or bucket truck equipment, as well as the truck's lights, radio and laptop, without the need to engage the engine or use a generator.
The system includes an Energy Xtreme power management system, electric motor, pump and control module. It is specifically designed to run hydraulic systems of up to 8 gallons per minute (gpm). It is safe, recyclable, requires no maintenance and has a product life of more than five years.
"Bucket trucks and similar utility vehicles have different demands than the typical truck because they often sit in one spot and run equipment for extended periods of time while repair crews are at work," said Ross Johnson, Energy Xtreme's vice president of product development. "Our U36 Crossover has a smaller footprint, weighs less than 750 pounds and provides more power than other products on the market."
The U36 can do more and last longer, he said. This can be crucial at times when crews are trying to repair power lines, restore phone service to customers or even trim trees to prevent damage to electrical wires.
The U36 Crossover is part of Xtreme's Independence Package (IP) Utility Series product line, which is being used by fleets of all sizes to save money on expensive equipment, to reduce gas consumption, to slow wear and tear on vehicle engines and to reduce emissions. The U36 is a plug-in rechargeable system that is plugged into a 30-amp wall outlet.
"Besides the significant cost savings and emission reduction we achieve utilizing Energy Xtreme's Utility Series, the weight reduction alone is enough to justify the conversion of our equipment," Richard Malish of Centerpoint Energy said. "The Utility Series reduces our payload by 35 percent and eliminates our weekly maintenance routine to upkeep our batteries and service generators."
For the past year, the U36 has been undergoing tests by leading providers of bucket trucks and services to the electric utility, telecommunications and contractor markets and is currently being used by utility companies and transportation departments
The U36 Crossover system features also include:
- Total weight of less than 750 pounds (90-pound control module and 650-pound cartridge)
- AC/DC, 12/36 VDC and 120 VAC power source
- Non-hazardous material, dry, solid state construction
- Two plug-and-play components – control module and 9K cartridge
- Self-auditing, emission reduction and cost savings tracking/reporting and telematics
- Ability to operate at extreme temperatures (130 degrees to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit)
- One-year warranty
The U36 Crossover can be used on any make and model bucket truck with a hydraulic system of 8 gpms or less.
The U36 will be featured at the Work Truck Show/47th Annual National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Convention/the Green Truck Summit, which will take place March 7-10 at the Indianapolis Convention Center.
