Twitter continues to be a media darling and source of tech controversy and there are few individuals who are as closely associated with the company and phenomenon as Jack Dorsey. Responsible for co-founding the company and revolutionizing Twitter's communication infrastructure, many people don't realize the depth of influence this entrepreneur truly has. He is also a botanist, jean designer, taxicab enthusiast, aspiring mayor of New York City and now -- after a brief stint away from the company -- back at the helm at the start-up as it heads down the road to maturity.
Dorsey's involvement with Twitter has forever altered the way information travels among people all over the globe. He first conceived of the idea for a Web-based short message communication service in college, inspired by the brief messages exchanged by New York taxicabs. Twitter was born in 2006, and currently has an estimated 200 million users, generating 65 million tweets a day and handling over 800,000 search queries per day. The service has become an international force, with two-thirds of its traffic coming from outside the U.S. Its instrumental role in a series of Middle Eastern uprisings, most notably Iran's in 2009 and Egypt's this year, led many to credit Twitter with changing the nature of political organizing forever.
Dorsey's latest venture as CEO comes in the form of a one-inch square device appropriately dubbed "Square." Square allows users to accept credit card payments via their mobile phones, either by swiping the card on the Square device or by manually entering the details on the phone. Square recently landed the backing of Visa, America's largest credit card company.
