PDSi Reports Second Quarter 2011 Results, Including Record Quarterly Service Revenue

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwire - Jul 27, 2011) - Pinnacle Data Systems, Inc. ("PDSi") (NYSE Amex: PNS) today reported its financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2011.

John D. Bair, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated, "We continue to realize excellent growth in our Service business where we have added new programs, customers and capability both in our U.S. and international operations. This growth has allowed PDSi to return to sustained profitability, generated a positive cash balance and provided some level of funding as we work to grow our Embedded Computing and Integrated / ODM Computing Solutions businesses. While we have not generated the level of revenue and profitability growth we would like in the Product business, we have made significant progress in positioning ourselves for growth, including our recently announced OEM agreement with IBM."

Total sales were $6.8 million for the 2011 second quarter, up 6% compared to the first quarter of 2011, marking the third sequential quarter of revenue growth. Timothy J. Harper, Chief Operating Officer, added, "Our second quarter Service revenue of $4.7 million shattered the previous quarterly Service revenue record of just under $4 million that we set in Q3 2010. By any measure, our Service revenue growth has been phenomenal, with first half 2011 Service revenue up $2.3 million, or 39%, compared to 2010."

The $0.2 million profit, or $0.02 per diluted share, for the second quarter included a net $0.1 million, or $0.01 per share, income tax expense associated with the finalization of the amended federal and state tax returns for prior years impacted by the research and development ("R&D") tax credit study. In Q4 2010 and Q1 2011, the Company recorded a $0.8 million cumulative benefit for these credits, net of a reserve for uncertain tax positions.

Cash generated from operations was $1.0 million, the tenth sequential quarter with positive operating cash flow. The Company did not utilize its line of credit during the quarter, and cash on hand at the end of June was $1.3 million, up $0.8 million compared to the end of March.

Financial Results

Net Income

Net income for the second quarter of 2011 was $0.2 million, or $0.02 per diluted share. This compares to $0.3 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, for the same quarter last year. The second quarter of 2011 was impacted by a nonrecurring net $0.1 million, or $0.01 per share, income tax expense related to the R&D tax credit study mentioned previously.

Sales

Total sales declined 14% to $6.8 million for the 2011 second quarter from $8.0 million for the same quarter a year ago. Second quarter Product sales declined 55% to $2.2 million in 2011 from $4.8 million in 2010. This decline primarily was attributable to significantly lower sales to telecom and defense OEMs that had very strong activity in the first half of 2010, along with declines at larger imaging and other OEM customers that had occurred over the course of 2010. Service sales increased $1.5 million, or 49%, to $4.7 million for the 2011 second quarter, with the growth attributable to the ramp of business in the U.S. and EMEA for both new customers and new programs within existing customers.

Gross Profit

Gross profit was flat at $2.2 million for the 2011 second quarter compared to same quarter last year. Gross margin as a percentage of revenue improved compared to last year from 28% to 33%. The gross margin improvement on lower year-on-year total sales largely was attributable to the growth of higher margin Service segment revenue. Within the Service segment, margins as a percentage of revenue improved from 40% to 42%, driven by improved operating leverage on increased sales. Product gross margin declined compared to the prior year because of the reduced sales.

Operating Expenses

Operating expenses were up slightly to just under $1.9 million for the 2011 second quarter from more than $1.8 million a year ago, reflecting investments in personnel necessary to support and grow the business.

Interest Expense

Interest expense for the 2011 second quarter was reduced to zero from $18,000 the same quarter last year. The Company did not use its line of credit during the quarter, compared to an average balance of approximately $1 million during the prior year second quarter.

Recent PDSi Highlights

  • PDSI recently announced that it has entered into an OEM agreement with IBM. This agreement provides the Company access to market leading technologies that can be leveraged across all three target markets to develop Products and Services designed for the demanding requirements of the telecommunications, defense, medical and ruggedized industrial markets.
  • Service revenue of $4.7 million for Q2 2011 was the all-time record quarterly Service revenue for PDSi. This reflects the continued strong growth of this business, with year-to-date Service revenue up 39% compared to the first half of 2010.
