STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN--(Marketwire - Aug 22, 2011) - The Swedish-American Life Science Summit (SALSS), considered one of the global life science industry's most influential meeting points, announced today that this year's Summit will focus on exciting improvements in treating disease through novel uses of engineering and science.
"SALSS has evolved along with the life science industry as a whole. Although we are still small and exclusive, our scope is increasingly global, whether exploring cutting edge technologies or forging strategic and financial alliances," said Barbro C. Ehnbom, SALSS Chairman. "For the first time in SALSS' history, we have almost as many international dignitaries as Swedish guests and more foreign than domestic presenting companies. We are thankful to have people with both depth of experience and knowledge from all parts of the world gathering in Stockholm to help us understand what is happening in the life science industry as a whole, and what new opportunities exist in this turbulent global climate."
The Swedish Minister for Health and Social Affairs, Göran Hägglund, who will inaugurate the summit, said, "SALSS is an excellent platform for developments in the industry."
"SALSS helps provide very good insight into the most advanced scientific developments taking place in Sweden, a country with a long and deep history of probing the scientific frontier," says legendary Frederick Frank, Vice Chairman, Peter J. Solomon Company.
This year's program will feature Richard Bergström, Director General of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations; Dr. William A. Haseltine, Founder of Haseltine Global Health and Human Genomic Sciences; Dr. Omid C. Farokhzad, Harvard Medical School and Dr. Elisabet de los Pinos, CEO of Aura Biosciences which presented at Davos last year. Swedish speakers at the conference will include Dr. Christina Åkerman, Director General of the Swedish Medical Products Agency and Dr. Mathias Uhlén, renowned scientist and Professor of Microbiology at Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology. The Summit will conclude with an inspiring talk by the global health guru Professor Hans Rosling.
"Over the years, SALSS has shown an incredible ability to bring together expertise from all corners of the world to discuss trends within Life Science, make deals and establish new valuable contacts," said Stefan Persson, Chairman of H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB.
Gold Sponsors of SALSS in 2011 include The Boston Consulting Group, Danske Bank, Delphi, Elekta and Ernst & Young.
