Battelle Wins Contracts Worth Nearly $100 Million to Support U.S. EPA

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwire - Oct 4, 2011) - Battelle won five contracts worth nearly $100 million with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in September.

Battelle's Energy, Environment and Material Sciences Global Business (EEMS) will lead the way on performing the work. The five contracts will assist the EPA by providing Battelle research and technical services ranging from water infrastructure/resource improvement to assessing toxicological effects from biological contaminants to ensuring the confidence of data used to assess the nation's air quality. The large-scale prime task orders will build on Battelle's successful 30-year history in supporting the EPA.

Karen Riggs, Battelle's EPA Relationship Manager, said that support for these contracts will come from all corners of Battelle. "The scope of the new contracts will require broad capabilities from across all the Battelle Global Businesses -- Energy, Environment, and Materials Sciences, Health and Life Sciences, National Security, and Laboratory Management," she said.

• In Chicago, the EPA's Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) oversees an integrated, multi-discipline ecosystem approach for the Great Lakes by implementing President Barack Obama's 2009 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Among the many challenges Battelle will face is protecting North America's great fresh water bodies from invasive aquatic species, including the much publicized Asian Carp. In addition, Battelle's five-year, $15 million contract will aid in implementing the President's initiative by providing technical and programmatic support focusing on contaminated sediments, Great Lakes ecosystem restoration, toxic substances, pollution prevention, habitat and wildlife protection and environmental monitoring.
  
  
• For the EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD)/National Risk Management Research Lab (NRMRL) in Cincinnati, Battelle will have options on multiple task order contracts that could extend to five years and $55 million for Scientific, Technical, Research, Engineering, and Modeling Support (STREAMS). Battelle scientists will perform water infrastructure assessment; water treatment technology evaluation; site remediation and pollution prevention.
  
  
• Battelle will assist the EPA's Office of Research and Development/National Homeland Security Research Center (NHSRC) in Cincinnati on a three-year, $7 million task order for risk assessment. The work will further enhance the knowledge base supporting EPA's risk-informed approach to preparing for, and responding to, releases of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials.
  
  
• A task order contract with a maximum of five-years, $2 million will mean Battelle works with the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation (OAR)/Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) for quality assurance and auditing support for EPA's National Air Toxic Trends Stations (NATTS), a nationwide ambient air quality network.
  
  
• With assistance from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which it manages, Battelle won options on what could be a five-year, $14 million contract with EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP). Battelle and PNNL will assist the Agency's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program in developing and validating toxicological and eco-toxicological assays for environmental contaminants that may have endocrine effects on humans.
