More Publishers Partnering With MetaMetrics to Offer Lexile Measures

Popular Reading Metric Helps Individuals Pick the Right Books for Improving Reading Skills

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - Oct 5, 2011) - MetaMetrics®, developer of The Lexile® Framework for Reading, announced today that the following publishers signed on to provide Lexile measures for their books in the third quarter of 2011. Lexile measures offer valuable information about a book's text complexity so that readers can select fiction and nonfiction titles that best match their unique ability level and reading goals.

A book receives a Lexile measure when MetaMetrics analyzes the complete text using propriety software that evaluates its various dimensions. Lexile measures range from below 200L for beginning-reader text to above 1700L for more advanced text. Books that have been assigned Lexile measures are available in MetaMetrics' free "Find a Book" search utility, which allows readers to build custom book lists and locate their selections at the local public library.

"With widespread adoption of the Common Core Standards, the importance of understanding and measuring text complexity has become part of the national conversation on what it means to be college- and career-ready," said MetaMetrics President and co-founder Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. "More than ever, it's imperative that educators and families understand postsecondary reading demands so that they can better prepare students for success in their academic and professional pursuits."

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts utilized Lexile measures for evaluating text complexity. They offer Lexile grade bands for reading comprehension development to help students prepare for the typical text demands of college and careers, and to guide publishers in developing grade-level content.

The Lexile Framework is a unique tool for accurately matching readers with text. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework evaluates reading ability and growth based on actual assessment results, rather than generalized age or grade levels. Lexile measures help teachers, librarians and parents find books, articles and other resources within a reader's recommended Lexile range: 100L below to 50L above his or her Lexile measure. Reading materials within this optimal Lexile range will challenge the individual's reading ability, while still maintaining interest and learning.

Recognized globally as the most widely used reading metric, tens of millions of Lexile measures are reported annually from reading assessments and programs. For more information, visit www.Lexile.com.
