The Mammoth Endurance Crib for Elite Athletes Returns in 2012

Accommodation Provided for Athletes to Train in a Spectacular High-Altitude Setting

Mammoth Lakes, CA, Feb. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pro-runners, cyclists and triathletes will once again have access to one of the world's most challenging and spectacular training grounds thanks to the return of the Mammoth Endurance Crib for 2012. The Endurance Crib, at Snowcreek Resort, is a luxury condominium that sleeps eight and will serve as a complimentary endurance basecamp for athletes who want to spend a week training at altitude.

Last year a number of top athletes took advantage of the Crib and discovered Mammoth:

  • 3X US PRO National Road Champion and Giro d'Italia stage winner "Fast" Freddie Rodriguez
  • Leslie Patterson, the 2011 Xterra Women's World Champion
  • Andy Jaques-Maines, pro bike racer and former US Cyclecross National Champion
  • The Canadian National Track (Cycling) Team

Many of the most elite runners in the world already call the region home as members of the Mammoth Track Club. This includes Meb Keflezighi, winner of the 2012 US Olympic Marathon Trials, who will represent the US this summer at the London Olympic Games.

"I've chosen to call Mammoth home because it's an incredible training base, from which I’ll be preparing for the summer Olympics, " Keflezighi said. "So I know from experience the Mammoth Endurance Crib is a phenomenal opportunity for athletes. When you're here, practically every inch of your backyard is a training ground challenging you to be the best you can be."

Keflezighi also is the 2009 New York Marathon champion and the 2004 Olympic Marathon Silver Medalist. Other elite athletes who call Mammoth home include 2004 Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist Deena Kastor, Josh Cox, who broke his own 50k US record in 2011. Top Ironman professional triathlete Chris Lieto has also used Mammoth as a training base in preparation for the Ironman World Championships in Kona.

"The Crib was met with great interest last summer so we’re bringing it back for elite athletes to experience Mammoth in 2012," said John Urdi, Executive Director, Mammoth Lakes Tourism. "With London right around the corner and thanks to our Olympic hopefuls, we’ve also extended invitations to the men’s and women’s Olympic track & field coaches to help prepare athletes for the summer games."
