EDINA, MN--(Marketwire - Mar 7, 2012) - Paddi Murphy, maker of Softies, a premium line of moisture-wicking sleepwear and luxury robes, has moved manufacturing facilities for four of its pajama lines to the U.S. The new factory locations, in South Carolina and Los Angeles, mark a strategic shift for the company.
"We're using this as a pilot program," says Dennis Murphy, owner of Paddi Murphy. "We want to bring these jobs back to the U.S. and do our part to help the economy recover. I'd rather pay a person than a tax," he adds, referring to import duties levied on clothing manufactured overseas.
Patriotism is a powerful part of the Murphy family: Dennis, a veteran, and his wife, an Army brat, have a son and daughter-in-law currently serving in Afghanistan. "Made in the U.S.A. stands for more than just geography," says Dennis. "And when this pilot program goes well, we plan to bring the manufacturing of all of our moisture-wicking products back on shore."
Murphy says that while manufacturing in the U.S. is more expensive, it comes with real benefits. "This helps us secure our supply chain. In theory you can call or e-mail people anywhere in the world, but having our manufacturing on U.S. soil helps ensure we don't have disruptions." Order fulfillment is especially critical for the company, which has seen sales on its e-commerce site spike nearly 400% in the last quarter. "The worst thing we can do for a customer is not fill orders," says Murphy.
Softies are made from performance fabric, much like sports training clothing, but are extremely comfortable. They wick moisture away from the wearer's skin and through the fabric, releasing it to the air. The patented Dri-release® with Fresh Guard® fabric keeps the wearer cool and dry, and eliminates odors and bacteria growth caused by sweat. Softies are designed for women experiencing night sweats and hot flashes due to menopause, chemotherapy, pregnancy, diabetes or sweltering summer nights.
"It's the same luxurious women's performance sleep and loungewear we've always made," says Murphy. "Now we're making it in the U.S. It's our own little economic recovery program, but it also helps our customers recover their lost sleep!"
