LONG BEACH, Calif., May 18, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The 2012 Alternative Clean Transportation Expo featured expert insight on propane autogas fueling and infrastructure from Alliance AutoGas partner Blue Star Gas. Held May 15-17 at the Long Beach Convention Center, the annual ACT Expo brings together industry organizations from across the country to put a spotlight on green transportation technology like autogas, the world's most widely used alternative fuel.
"The ACT Expo provides a wealth of information to help fleet operators make the most cost-effective choice when it comes to adopting alternative fuel vehicles," said Darren Engle of Blue Star Gas, who is also chairman of the Propane Education and Research Council's Research and Technology Development Working Group. "Businesses and municipalities are increasingly struggling with high gasoline prices, and propane autogas is an affordable, clean, American-made fuel that enables fleets to save on fuel costs right away."
Propane autogas is 30 percent cleaner than gasoline and powers more than 18 million vehicles globally. And because 98 percent of the U.S. autogas supply is made in America, U.S. fleets that run on autogas are also doing their part to enhance national energy security.
Blue Star Gas displayed an autogas-powered Ford Expedition as part of the PERC booth. On a panel titled, "Integration of Alternative Fuel Refueling Infrastructure into the Existing Retail Environment," Engle's presentation, "You've Got Options: Filling Up with the World's Most Popular Alternative Fuel," gave an overview of autogas infrastructure and outlined affordable fueling options for fleets.
Fleets running on autogas currently save around $1.50 per gallon compared to gasoline, and autogas fleets report reduced maintenance needs. Alliance AutoGas also provides funding options that enable fleets to switch to autogas at no upfront cost.
"Many fleets are interested in autogas because it's more affordable to implement than other alternative fuels on the market," said Engle. "For example, fueling stations for compressed natural gas cost around 15 times as much as autogas stations, and converting a vehicle to CNG costs three times as much as converting a vehicle to autogas."
As part of the national Alliance AutoGas network, Blue Star Gas supplies fleets from California to Washington State with American-made autogas. The Alliance AutoGas complete program for fleets includes autogas vehicle conversions, installation of a fueling station at the fleet base, data integration for fuel management systems, operational and safety training, and ongoing technical support.
