Thank you, Sunshine fans, for a record-breaking season.
More than $13,000 was raised in Sunday's fourth annual Bikinis and Boardshorts event at Sunshine Village. This year for the first time guys were able to participate in their boardshorts raising money for Prostate Cancer Canada. The girls continued their remarkable efforts raising money for Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
"It was an amazing event," said Marie Claire, Sunshine Village Events Coordinator. "For one girl to raise over two thousand dollars, it's just unbelievable."
One team of girls even managed to crack the $4,000 mark with Breast Friends raising $4,686.
Sunshine held its inaugural event in April 2009 and has raised over $65,000 for cancer research with this event alone.
"Sunshine is very proud to support Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada through this event," said Don Beaulieu, Vice President, Sales, Marketing and New Business, Sunshine Village.
He added, "We would like to thank our participants and donors for their continued efforts in raising funds for these two great causes."
This was followed by the 84th annual Slush Cup on May 21st, which saw brave Sunshiners donning a wide array of costumes and plunging into a chilly pool - much to the delight of onlookers basking in the sunshine.
It was a year of records and spring brought with it some incredible skiing, thanks to the greatest snowfall in Sunshine Village history.
An incredible 1047cm (over 34 feet) of Sunshine's champagne powder blanketed the resort this season, providing fantastic conditions for events old and new.
"Four Elephants Deep!" trumpeted the National Post, as Sunshine smashed monthly and then all-time previous snowfall records in late March and early April.
From the new twitter contest, Ski the Day Before We Open, which garnered two separate Twitter awards (Slopefillers and a Ski Area Management award) to the $40,000 raised at the annual Dash for Cash held by the The Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury, Sunshine saw a wide array of events and accolades.
In February, approximately $1.1 million was raised to help keep North American waterways clean during the three-day Waterkeeper's Alliance Celebrity Invitational hosted by the Fairmont Banff Springs and Sunshine Village.
The Invitational attracted dozens of celebrities including Globe winner Edward James Olmos, Matthew Gray Gubler, Kevin Sorbo, Alicia Silverstone, Peter Fonda, Lorenzo Lamas, Ed Begley Jr., Amy Acker, Jennifer Finnigan, Brad Garrett, Giancarlo Esposito, Julia Jones, Camryn Manheim, Jonathan Silverman, Kelly Lebrock and Virginia Madsen as well as many others.
Sunshine Speedsters Ski Club and the Sunshine Alpine Racers Ski Club also hosted fantastic events including K1 provincials and more, showcasing young athletes from around the province.
