SAN MATEO, Calif., June 1, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Talon Therapeutics, Inc., (OTCBB:TLON) announced enrollment and dosing of the first patient in the Phase 3 confirmatory study of Marqibo® (vincristine sulfate liposome injection) in adults (60 years of age and older) with newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome negative (Ph-) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), known as the HALLMARQ Study.
"We believe Marqibo as part of a multi-drug treatment regimen has the potential to improve the outcomes for patients with newly diagnosed Ph- ALL and we are pleased the HALLMARQ Study which is being conducted under an SPA has commenced enrollment," stated Steven R. Deitcher M.D., President, Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of Talon Therapeutics.
On March 21, 2012, Marqibo was reviewed by the FDA Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC). With a vote of 7 to 4 with 2 abstentions, the ODAC supported a favorable benefit/risk assessment for Marqibo monotherapy for the treatment of adult Ph- ALL in second or greater relapse or that has progressed following two or more lines of anti-leukemia therapy. The action date under the Prescription Drug User Fee Act for Talon's new drug application seeking accelerated approval of Marqibo in such indication is August 12, 2012.
About the HALLMARQ Study
Title: "A Phase 3, Multicenter, Randomized Study to Evaluate the Substitution of Marqibo (Vincristine Sulfate Liposome Injection, VSLI) for Standard Vincristine Sulfate Injection (VSI) in the Induction, Intensification, and Maintenance Phases of Combination Chemotherapy in the Treatment of Subjects ≥ 60 Years Old with Newly Diagnosed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)."
Primary Objective: To compare overall survival (OS) among subjects 60 years of age and older with newly diagnosed ALL who receive Marqibo versus standard vincristine as a component of multi-agent induction, intensification, and maintenance chemotherapy. The study is powered for superiority.
About Marqibo
Marqibo is a novel, targeted Optisome™ encapsulated formulation product candidate of the FDA-approved anticancer drug vincristine. Talon is primarily developing Marqibo for the treatment of Ph- adult ALL. Vincristine, a microtubule inhibitor, is FDA-approved for ALL and is widely used as a single agent and in combination regimens for treatment for hematologic malignancies such as lymphomas and leukemias. Talon's encapsulation formulation is designed to provide prolonged circulation of the drug in the blood and accumulation at the tumor site. These characteristics are intended to increase the dose of vincristine delivered in a safe and effective manner.
Talon has received orphan drug and fast track designations for Marqibo for the treatment of adult ALL from the FDA. Marqibo has also received orphan drug designation in adult ALL from the European Medicines Evaluation Agency.
In addition to the HALLMARQ Study in front-line adult elderly ALL, Marqibo is being evaluated in an on-going Phase 3 trial in front-line adult elderly aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma conducted by the German High Grade Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Study group, and in a Phase 1 trial in pediatric cancers, including ALL, being conducted by the National Cancer Institute. A Phase 2 trial of Marqibo in front-line adult ALL to be conducted by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is expected to begin enrolling in the third quarter of 2012.
