SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 14, 2012) - A free social sports platform called SportStream launches on iPad today to help sports fans share the magic of fandom and live sports. SportStream delivers the first true second-screen experience for enjoying live sports by placing everything fans need -- friends, followers, curated social media streams, real-time stats and chat -- right at the user's fingertips. Combined with an intuitive and beautiful user interface, SportStream helps fans participate in the conversation in a fun and exciting way that makes them feel closer to the action and part of the in-game community.
SportStream is a new company spun out of Evri, the popular real-time content discovery engine and mobile app, and is backed by $3.5 million in Series A funding from Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Seahawks owner Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital.
Over the last several years, watching sports has changed dramatically; it has shifted from a passive experience to an interactive format enhanced by additional screens and the rise of social platforms.
A Forrester report shows that 85 percent of tablet owners use their devices daily while watching TV. Another report from Nielsen shows that 46 percent of tablet users split their attention between TV and the tablet on a daily basis.
This year's Super Bowl XLVI triggered as many as 12,000 thousand tweets per second and ended up with over 13 million tweets, making it impossible for fans to find the information they want while sifting through the endless noise of advertisement and half-time show debates. SportStream is a natural progression to this evolution: a place where you can go to interact with other passionate fans to find out what others are talking about, debate and argue, and share in the excitement, successes and failures of their favorite teams.
SportStream also connects through Facebook to help you quickly find the games your friends are watching and join them. It also identifies the favorite teams and players you've 'liked' and provides a customized experience by automatically following the games you are most likely to be interested in. SportStream users get the information they crave, as the app shows only relevant social content to the selected game. Users can chat with fellow fans in rooms for each game or easily start Twitter and Facebook conversations specific to each game.
"If I watch a game at home, I'm always checking in to see what my friends, other fans, reporters and bloggers are saying and reacting to," said Will Hunsinger, Co-Founder and CEO, SportStream. "With SportStream, we take the best of watching a game with your buddies and combine it with the conversation online. Whether it's talking trash, reveling in your team's victory or a rival's defeat, SportStream is that central place to be tapped in and enjoy your favorite teams and games to the fullest."
SportStream features include:
- Social media streams, featuring only relevant content to the game the user is watching;
- Customizable chat rooms and push notifications that bring users to the most talked about games;
- Real-time stats, scoring summary and play-by-play information with social integration making it easier than ever to back up your trash talk;
- Sophisticated semantic engine automatically identifies and tracks influential Twitter personalities, bloggers, sports journalists, teams, players, Facebook friends and fans;
- Personalization features make it dead simple to follow your favorite teams' games;
- A clean, intuitive and attractive UI that makes watching a truly social and interactive experience; and
- Push notifications that tell you when your friends are watching a game on SportStream.
