ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the leading international consultancy, design, engineering and management services company, today announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide engineering consulting services for the civil works on Lines 3 and 6 of the Metro System in Santiago, Chile. The services that are part of this 12 month, US$ 9 million contract (of which US$3 million for ARCADIS) will be carried out by a consortium made up of ARCADIS, ARA WorleyParsons and Sener Ingeniería y Sistemas. A team of 25 people from ARCADIS will work on the project.
The project is part of the Urban Transport Investment Plan of Santiago through which Metro S.A (Metro) will expand its current 100 km network to 140 km, including two new lines:
- Line 6: total length of 15.4 kilometers, including design of 10 stations, and
- Line 3: total length of 22.1 kilometers including 18 stations.
These new lines cover a large portion of the city and will intersect with almost all of the currently operating metro lines. Therefore, a major challenge for this project is developing a design that addresses this interaction with existing lines through tunnels and station areas.
The project scope includes basic engineering for the civil works for the two lines, to generate all the information necessary for Metro to define the subsequent detailed engineering and construction contracts. Among the specialties involved in the study are architecture, structures, tunnels, soil mechanics and transit studies. ARCADIS will also be involved in getting the project approved by the environmental authorities and will participate in the soil studies, tunnel design and subcontractor management for the consortium.
"The large number of high-quality professionals at the disposal of ARCADIS and the consortium as a whole, including the experience, knowledge and efficiency needed for these types of highly complex projects, meant that the consortium is ideally placed to satisfy all of the client's needs, both in terms of quality and meeting time schedules," said Hernan Bezamat, CEO of the Chilean activities of ARCADIS.
