ST. LOUIS, July 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Congregation B'nai Amoona is hosting the "Rooftop Pastor" from an inner city Chicago church for a Shabbat morning talk July 28. This Shabbat also marks the return of Rabbi Carnie Rose and his family from a sabbatical leave in Israel.
Rev. Corey Brooks, Sr. founded New Beginnings Church of Chicago, an urban, non-denominational in the inner city on Chicago's South Side. Brooks' messages of restoration and reconciliation have attracted over 2,500 members and he has been the force behind Project HOOD (Helping Others Obtain Destiny), which seeks to foster collaboration between the private sector, public sector and faith-based organizations in order to combat the "four primary ills of urban America: Social dysfunctions, Educational deprivation, Economic deficiencies and Spiritual dehydration. The visionary took to the road BY FOOT June 5, 2012 for an over 3000 miles journey to raise awareness about violence that plagues Chicago and many urban communities and to raise funds to build a community center to aid in prevention in his own Woodlawn community, while acknowledging with each step that violence is not a geographical or racial issue – but an issue of humanity.
As of July 24, 2012 Chicago's homicide rate had soared to 294 deaths and over 1275 shootings. The city officials have been hard pressed to provide relief to crime ridden communities looking for hope in violence prevention. Though Pastor Brooks' own community has seen only one murder since his congregation took to patrolling the streets under his HOODvasion effort.
His visit to St. Louis will be marked by several events:
- On Saturday July 28th Pastor Brooks will be the guest speaker at Congregation B'nai Amoona
- On Saturday afternoon, Pastor Brooks will be canvassing the North St. Louis area with James Clark and the Better Family Life (6017 Natural Bridge) organization in an effort to bring awareness to the cause of violence prevention through canvassing and patrol. The effort is very similar to Brooks' own HOODvasion. The canvassing will start at 11am and Pastor Brooks will join after the culmination of events at Congregation B'nai Amoona .
