St. Paul Chiropractor Treats Student Athletes at Risk for Fall Sports Injuries

ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 19, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With the fall sports season less than a month away, chiropractor Dr. Troy Robinson is raising awareness about the dangers of fall sports injuries. In the event of a sports injury, the chiropractor provides chiropractic care, rehabilitative exercises and massage treatments. Dr. Robinson stresses that prompt care is essential to helping the body safely heal and avoid scar tissue buildup. Dr. Robinson offers school physicals for student athletes.

Healing Hands Wellness Center in St. Paul, MN announced that the practice is offering school physicals for student athletes in preparation for fall sports season. Chiropractor Troy Robinson recommends all students receive a physical prior to competing in fall sports. Doing so can help identify underling spinal misalignments that may put the student at risk for a sports injury.

"Youth sports are an important opportunity for physical activity and team building," said Dr. Robinson. "However, these athletic activities also put students at risk for musculoskeletal injury. Since the body is still growing and developing, an injury to the musculoskeletal system can lead to chronic pain and long-term health problems."

The chiropractor stressed that proactive, preventative care is essential to protecting active student athletes. "Gentle, hands-on chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to correct a misalignment before it causes serious pain or injury," said Dr. Robinson. "A pre-sports physical is an important health assessment."

Knee pain and back pain are two common fall sports injuries. These injuries may occur due to repetitive wear and tear on the body. A sudden fall during football, soccer, or cross-country running can strain or tear soft tissue. For example, if ligaments near the knee are torn, swelling and knee pain can occur. The knee will then be unable to properly support the body while walking or running.

Back pain can also be caused by a sudden fall. It may also occur slowly over time do to chronic wear and tear on the musculoskeletal system. If a herniated disc occurs, this disc can compress nearby nerves. Depending on the disc's location, student athletes may suffer from neck pain, shoulder pain, or headaches and migraines.

"Without proper treatment, sports injuries will fail to properly heal," said Dr. Robinson. "Our integrated approach to injury treatment combines natural pain management with chiropractic care and corrective exercises. By restoring alignment to the body, we correct the underlying cause for pain. Corrective exercises help safely restore movement and flexibility to the body."

Dr. Robinson may also recommend massage therapy to help relieve tension trapped deep within the muscle fascia. Massage also increases endorphin levels and improves circulation, which promotes internal healing.

Dr. Robinson provides sports injury care for St. Paul, Highland Park, Minneapolis and Twin Cities high school students.
