UPDATE: iovation Surpasses One Billion Tracked Devices; Reveals Linux Machines Have Highest Fraud Rate

Windows Devices and OS X for Mac Have 2nd and 3rd Highest Percentage of Fraud When Compared to Overall Transactions From Those Devices

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwire - Sep 10, 2012) - iovation, the Device Reputation Authority™ protecting online businesses from fraud and abuse, today announced that it now tracks the online behavior of more than a billion devices, noting that Linux devices have the highest percentage of fraudulent transactions originating from them. The company came to its findings by analyzing fraudulent transactions as a percentage of overall transactions from each mobile and fixed Internet device it tracked from January to July 2012. By utilizing iovation's database, the world's largest information resource about devices used in online fraud and abuse, the company found the top three operating systems with the highest fraud rate were:

1) Linux
2) Windows
3) OS X for Mac

"Interestingly, we found that 2.3 percent of all transactions from Linux-based machines, 1.4 percent of all transactions from Windows machines and 1 percent of all transactions from Macs were fraudulent," said Scott Waddell, Vice President of Technology at iovation. "You'll note that there were no mobile platforms in the top three; we believe this is because fraudsters prefer operating systems that make it easier to automate their schemes."

The billion devices that iovation tracks include everything from desktops to laptops, mobile phones to tablets, and handheld gaming devices to gaming consoles and smart TVs. iovation's ReputationManager 360 assesses transaction risk for a broad range of industries based on a shared device intelligence network that provides real-time risk reporting, exposed associations between online activities, and device reputation.

"Having identified over a billion unique Internet-connected devices is a phenomenal milestone which really highlights the critical mass we've reached with our global device reputation service," said Greg Pierson, CEO at iovation. "Our ability to re-identify unique devices as the same ones regardless of which online business they touch is highly valuable. Understanding how all of those devices and transactions are associated, and combining that with our customer-provided real-time fraud experience, is even more exciting. These capabilities are the key to providing our customers with an invaluable level of insight into anonymous consumer behavior, and allows us to identify risk that no other service can spot."

In many cases, what appears to be a new device for an online business is not a new device to iovation. In fact, in 84 percent of all transactions deemed fraudulent at iovation customers, iovation already had experience with the associated devices. This knowledge base results in more fraud catch above and beyond the risk assessed by real-time business rules. And when a new device appears, iovation utilizes its network of associations and real-time risk scoring to sniff out suspicious activity like no other company can.

The company's ReputationManager 360 solution combats cyber fraud by providing actionable intelligence about high-risk devices for hundreds of customers and thousands of cyber security experts. By utilizing this collective evidence and experience, companies can dramatically expand their fraud knowledge and surveillance beyond their own corporate walls. This unique iovation capability makes it possible to proactively identify devices that are associated with fraud and abuse before bad actors can strike.
