DHL Employees in Canada Mark Global Volunteer Day With We Day and Un Techo para mi pais initiatives

  • Volunteer efforts part of fourth annual DHL Global Volunteer Day
  • More than 60,000 DHL employees in 120 countries expected to participate in global initiative

TORONTO, Sept. 13, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- DHL, the world's logistics company, today marked the fourth annual Global Volunteer Day 2012 with their employees as part of its global drive to give back to local communities and to spark a passion for volunteerism among employees. Employees across Canada are taking part in We Day and Un Techo para mi pais revitalization projects as well as a number of volunteer projects this fall.

This year's theme is "Handle With Care," and volunteers will once again lend their helping hands to local community projects with more than 60,000 DHL employees donating their time and resources to 600 different projects in 120 countries from September 6 to 12.

"DHL is committed to giving back to the communities we work in every day", says Greg Hewitt, President of DHL Express Canada. "As a global organization, we understand the work we do is strongly rooted in communities all around the world, and our volunteer projects give us the opportunity to show our support and commitment."

DHL is working with not-for-profit partner, Free the Children, and We Day, a youth-led volunteer initiative that focuses on empowering youth and inspiring global change. In the month of September alone, DHL employees will be volunteering for nearly 1,200 hours starting this weekend. More than 120 employees are set to package 75,000 kits on September 14-16, 2012 for We Day events nationwide.

DHL is also working with Un Techo para mi pais on global volunteer initiatives. Un Techo para mi pais is a youth-led organization that works with families and volunteers to overcome poverty in vulnerable regions. DHL's Americas management team is set to head to Mexico from September 28-30, 2012, to help revitalize local communities and select DHL employees will head to the Dominican Republic from October 12-14, 2012, to volunteer on similar efforts.

In addition, DHL employees from across the country are taking part in a number of other volunteer efforts this fall. Initiatives include the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup in Calgary and Vancouver in September, participation with Moisson Montreal food bank throughout October, and ongoing volunteering throughout the year with Volunteer Ottawa.

"These ten days are not the only days that our employees contribute to their communities and embrace the spirit of volunteerism," said Donna Letterio, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Canada. "Their dedicated community outreach is a year-round effort and part of a corporate commitment to make a positive contribution to the world."

As an international logistics and mail provider with a network of 470,000 employees, DHL reaches nearly every corner of the world, and as such, believes it has a special responsibility to use its global presence, as well as the knowledge, experience and commitment of its employees in local markets around the world to benefit society.

Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2011, the initiative was rolled out globally with tremendous success supporting the company's three Corporate Responsibility programs – GoTeach (championing education), GoGreen (protecting the environment) and GoHelp (delivering help after natural disasters).
