CSD: Two-thirds of UK physicians aware of mobile applications for professional use, approximately half currently using them

Two-thirds of UK physicians aware of mobile applications for professional use

Approximately half currently using them

London, October 4, 2012 - CSD - Cegedim Strategic Data, leading provider of integrated healthcare research, has released the results of its recent online survey amongst UK healthcare professionals exploring the use of mobile applications.

The study of 675 healthcare professionals was conducted between May and June 2012.  The results include healthcare professionals from a wide range of specialties and from primary care.   The aims of the research were to identify levels of awareness and usage of mobile applications[1]: the degree of personal professional use and the extent of recommendation to patients.

Approximately two-thirds (63%) were aware of mobile applications specifically tailored for healthcare professional use.  Awareness was higher amongst secondary care physicians than primary care (67% vs. 55%), particularly rheumatologists (89%).

Less than half of HCPs (44%) were personally using mobile applications for professional purposes.   Of those that did, a higher proportion where in secondary care and more likely to be physicians than nurses.  Across specialties, there was greater use amongst Clinical Oncology, Haematology and Cardiology.

'Medical calculators' were frequently cited as being commonly used applications, although there appeared to be no general pattern in terms of what was being consulted.  When asked to name applications, over 80 different responses were provided.

Amongst HCPs aware of mobile applications, 11% recommended them to patients.  This level of endorsement was the same across both primary and secondary care, however Diabetic Specialist Nurses were more likely to personally recommend mobile applications to patients than all other specialties (64%).

The most frequently recommended applications were related to diabetes or general dietary/fitness advice. Primary care physicians also mentioned Patient.co.uk and My Asthma Log.

Representative promotion of mobile applications was not recalled widely by HCPs.  However individual companies were mentioned and CSD have collated all information and this can be made available on request.
