CHICAGO, Oct. 11, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Atlas Tube, a division of JMC Steel Group, hosted a free lunch and learn on September 28 to educate attendants on the benefits of steel hollow structural sections (HSS). The lunch and learn was part of SteelDay, an annual event for the design and construction industry that's sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
The lunch and learn was hosted by Brad Fletcher, senior sales engineer at Atlas Tube, and attended by more than 35 people. Structural engineers, architects and analysts represented 27 companies, including the Chicago Transit Authority and Sargent and Lundy LLC — all from the greater Chicagoland area.
SteelDay is the steel industry's largest educational and networking event, and provides AISC professionals, students and the public with an opportunity to learn more about the structural steel supply chain. This was the fourth annual SteelDay celebration, and more than 10,000 people attended approximately 175 free events hosted by AISC members and partners across the U.S.
"Our SteelDay event was a great opportunity to educate the steel construction industry on the benefits of HSS and its uses in structural engineering," said Fletcher. "Produced in round, square and rectangular shapes, sizes and gauges, HSS has many advantages — but the myths need to be dispelled in order for HSS to be utilized to its fullest potential."
Atlas Tube's lunch and learn presentation was supplemented by the premiere of an ongoing educational video series, "Designing with HSS," to educate engineers and contractors on the many advantages of using HSS.
"The multi-part HSS video series features discussions, including but not limited to general properties, uses and applications, and the production of HSS," added Fletcher. "I would like to see HSS be the material of choice for engineers designing in the future."
