OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 24, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Urologist Michael Jacobson, MD, PhD, has joined Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC) as Chief of Urology in the Department of General Surgery.

I'm also very pleased to be training the next generation of physicians in urology and urologic surgery through our Department of General Surgery's resident education program."
Dr. Jacobson is keen to advance treatment of urologic cancers and kidney stones. One area of interest to him is the high rate of prostate cancer among African American in the United States, and in Oakland in particular. He is working to increase access for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer within this high risk population. Dr. Jacobson is also interested in developing a research program to examine how nutrition and dietary supplements might affect urologic cancers.
Dr. Jacobson earned his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Washington (UW) in 1997. His postgraduate research training included a Fellowship in Biogeochemical Cycles in UW's Department of Chemistry from 1997-1999, followed by a Fellowship in Clinical Molecular Genetics in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UW's School of Medicine from 1999-2001. He then went on to earn his MD from UW in 2005. Dr. Jacobson received his postgraduate clinical training in urology at the University of California, Davis, serving his internship and residency, and going on to become Chief Resident in the Department of Urology. Prior to joining ACMC, Dr. Jacobson was a urologist in Kaiser Permanente's Central Valley Area.
Dr. Jacobson is a member of the American Urological Association, the Western Section American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists.
