PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Oct. 26, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Monday, October 29th is National Cat Day, a time to honor our feline friends and give them a little extra love and attention. While cats are often stereotyped as independent and elusive creatures who do not want to be bothered by their owners, most cats will actually meow at the thought of a new game! To help cat parents celebrate the holiday and strengthen the bond they have with their pets, Pet360.com recommends four indoor games for cats.
- Mimic the Hunt: Cats are predatory creatures, but that doesn't mean they're always hungry when in "hunting mode". Playing games that encourage stalking, chasing, and pouncing will show you a whole new side to your cat! You should also test out different healthy and safe toys that move, make sounds, and involve vibrant colors or different textures to see which best elicits a predator-like reaction from your cat.
- Rotating Toys: Just like kids, cats can tire of toys fast. Also like kids, rediscovering said toys can create opportunities for new fun to be had. After a few play sessions with a cat teaser or squeaker, rotate it out with a new toy to keep your cat engaged and active in the game - even bottle caps, card board boxes, and milk tab sealants make for great toys.
- Where's My Meal?: We were taught growing up not to play with our food, but making a game out of mealtime for cats is actually a good thing! Putting your cat's food in a puzzle feeder will not only make him work for his meal, but it also simulates the hunt for food he would experience if he were an outdoor cat. Hiding his food around the house and switching the location of it daily is another great way to simulate the same experience.
- Mountain Climber: Have you ever found your cat on top of the refrigerator or a bookshelf and wondered why she went up there? Cats climb objects to alleviate stress, and this behavior can be even more common in a home with many cats. Clearing space on the tops of tall pieces of furniture, or having a cat perch for her to climb on, can create hours of playtime for you and your cat.
