Allied Pediatrics of New York Bands Together During Hurricane Sandy to Continue Providing Care to Our Children

MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The aftermath and devastation that Hurricane Sandy has left behind has placed a strain on both healthcare providers and medically vulnerable patients throughout the New York region. Providing healthcare to over 150,000 children in these areas, Allied Pediatrics of New York, PLLC (APNY), a 96-pediatrician group formed in 2007, has united to support its affected practices – allowing them to continue to safely provide necessary patient care.

After Hurricane Irene made landfall in late August 2011, APNY took action in natural disaster preparedness and implementation to ensure operations would continue if their practice regions were faced with this again. With Hurricane Sandy, APNY was now prepared to take action. As a single entity, the large pediatric group has been able to pool its resources such as office space and physician coverage across their practices. This advantage played a critical role in this time of need, enabling providers to continue their operations after the storm.

Amongst the APNY offices that were damaged during Sandy were Beach Pediatrics located in Long Beach and Island Park. Through APNY's natural disaster preparation and implementation plan, Beach Pediatrics' providers were quickly able to resume their business operations as they were able to use office space belonging to one of their partner practices, Valley Stream Pediatrics. In addition, Pediatric Health Associates as well as Children's Medical Group (CMG) located in Plainview and Bayside have also been hosting providers from other divisions that were affected by the storm. The APNY After Hours Center has been temporarily relocated to CMG Plainview.

APNY's concerns for child health go beyond the group's patients. Several Allied pediatricians, including CEO Dr. Gary Mirkin, volunteer at the many shelters set up in Nassau and Suffolk counties to provide medical care and have been instrumental in inaugurating influenza immunization clinics for the storm victims. Dr. Anthony Battista also serves as the Chief Medical Officer of the Nassau County Medical Reserve Corps.
