SportStream Integrates Facebook, Bringing Sports Fans Engaging Content Around Every Live Game

Filtering Technology Creates Personalized Experience for Every Fan

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Dec 4, 2012) - SportStream, the social sports experience that delivers fans the first true second-screen for watching their favorite games, today released an update adding an innovative Facebook integration, bringing fans more engaging content from friends, teams, athletes and media centered around live games.

SportStream's update applies its proprietary filtering technology to Facebook, creating a personalized and unique experience for every fan. SportStream's Uberstream now incorporates any game-related content from users' Facebook News Feeds. With this integration, SportStream users will now see their friends' status updates or comments relevant to a particular game or match. Plus, they will receive the most relevant Facebook posts for any given game or match from their favorite teams, media and personalities. Users can also "Like," comment and share the Facebook posts they discover in their SportStream feeds for any game.

In addition, by capitalizing on the high quality photo and video content posted to Facebook, SportStream users will have access to pictures and highlights as teams update their social media page, such as this collection of in-game photographs put together by the San Francisco 49ers.

Over the last several years watching sports has changed dramatically, shifting from a passive experience to an interactive format enhanced by additional screens and the rise of social platforms. Forty percent of tablet or smartphone users access their device daily while watching TV. And this is doubly true in sports, with about 83 percent of sports fans checking social media sites while watching the game.

"Sports fans are increasingly relying on Facebook for team news, injury reports, special content and interviews. SportStream's new Facebook experience delivers fans a game time feed providing an engaging and easy way to interact with their favorite teams," said Bob Morgan, CEO, SportStream. "The added personalization should also drive exciting engagement between friends and make trash talking even easier."

Social engagement on sports has recently spiked through the roof:

  • According to an Adobe study, Facebook brand engagement has risen 896% on a year-over-year basis
  • 35% of 18-35 year olds regularly using social media to comment, tweet/retweet, share or link to online sports content
  • 45% of sports fans following teams or athletes on social media

Teams and athletes are catching on, too:

  • The Los Angeles Lakers have more than 11 million Facebook fans and 2.8 million Twitter followers
  • The New York Yankees boast 3.5 million Facebook fans and more than 350,000 Twitter followers
  • The San Francisco 49ers, have 1.5 million Facebook fans and 270,000 Twitter Followers
  • Kobe Bryant has a staggering 14.4 million Facebook fans
