GROTON, Conn., Feb. 24, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A Groton chiropractor wants to make area residents aware of a program that enables sensible, healthy weight loss as opposed to crash or fad diets that may do more harm than good. Dr. Joseph Mascaro, DC of Advanced Back & Neck Care Center has been helping many of his patients lose weight through a method of accelerated fat burning known as Ideal Protein. "This short-term plan avoids many of the pitfalls of diets that cause loss of water and muscle weight which can make people unwell," says Dr. Mascaro.
Excess weight has long been associated with a variety of health problems, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, liver and kidney impairment and sleep apnea. Groton chiropractor Dr. Mascaro points out that those unwanted pounds can also contribute to musculoskeletal pain including back hip and knee pain and joint degeneration.
"The more weight the joints must bear, the more prone they are to wear and tear," he says. "This can eventually manifest itself in the form of osteoarthritis, leaving the sufferer with chronic pain and stiffness."
Overweight individuals may experiment with a variety of diet plans that promise short-term weight loss, but Dr. Mascaro notes that numbers can be deceiving. "Many crash diets cause an immediate weight drop, but those pounds represent temporary loss, but then regaining the weight plus some due to muscle loss during the dieting." He adds that these diets also tend to have a negative impact on blood sugar levels, leaving the dieter suffering from headaches, fatigue, poor nutrition and food cravings.
According to Dr. Mascaro, the Ideal Protein diet program focuses on speeding up fat metabolism in the body. The diet temporarily reduces carbohydrates and sugars from the diet and adds protein-rich products. This step, explains Dr. Mascaro, reins in the body's learned pattern of insulin overproduction, effectively resetting the metabolism. "An overweight person who consumes a balanced selection of foods may get proper nutrition without ever losing weight," he says. "We must actually eliminate certain foods to put the body back on a healthy metabolic path."
The program consists of four phases. Weight loss occurs during Phase 1; Phases 2 through 4 concentrate on the gradual reintroduction of carbohydrates and other foods, and on nutrition education to help the patient continue to live a healthy lifestyle. "It's a short-term program with long-term results, because it actually gives the patient control over future eating habits," says Dr. Mascaro.
In addition to the Ideal Protein program, Advanced Back & Neck Care Center provides treatment for neck and back pain, headaches, sciatica, work and auto injuries. They also offer naturopathic medicine and acupuncture to facilitate injury recovery, pain management, treatment for illness and general wellness care.
