NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Apr 11, 2013) - New York cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Kosdon says he values the natural beauty in a smile. For this reason, he notes that he works with patients at his private practice to create smiles that appear as though his patients were born with them. The New York dentist adds that he strives to provide cosmetic dentistry treatments and smile makeover procedures that look so natural, the work itself is undetectable and the focus is all on the results.
When Dr. Kosdon approaches a smile makeover procedure, he says he tries to recreate proportions and dimensions that fit the patient's face and smile lines. He notes his goal is to take diagnostic information from the patient -- including factors such as hair color, skin tone, and eye color -- and conservatively construct a smile that complements their unique characteristics while creating an aesthetic that is cosmetically beautiful, but also natural-looking.
"Patients are no longer trying to achieve the unnaturally bright, white, fake Hollywood smile," says Dr. Kosdon. His goal at his New York cosmetic dentistry practice is to restore natural beauty to patients that have lost teeth, have teeth that have become worn down, or have teeth that have become discolored or misaligned over time. The end result is a smile that fits the patient and the patient's face.
While he says many cosmetic dentists file teeth down and send mockups to a lab in order to create a "perfect" smile, Dr. Kosdon notes that he takes a conservative approach to cosmetic restoration and attempts to preserve as much of each patient's natural tooth structures as possible. He also says that due to a recent renaissance with materials and cements, many procedures at his practice can address minor alterations, discoloration, or misalignment without the use of a numbing agent.
As an example of his conservative approach, Dr. Kosdon highlights porcelain veneers. He says some porcelain veneers are now as thin as a contact lens, allowing even more minimal treatment than before. When patients are able to preserve more of their natural teeth behind their veneers, he says light is able to diffuse through the porcelain and use the natural tooth structure to create a realistic, natural looking brightness as opposed to the chalky opaqueness that can result when much of the patient's tooth is removed and a thicker veneer is applied. Additionally, Dr. Kosdon works with technicians in Europe to import the porcelain for his veneers, utilizing materials that few in the United States are currently using.
Ultimately, "less is more" is the philosophy of Dr. Kosdon's practice. According to him, cosmetic dentistry has evolved in the last ten years to the point where dentists no longer need to disrupt so much of the patient's natural teeth to provide excellent results. Since the patient's own teeth are the basis for all cosmetic enhancement at his practice, he says: "Next to being born with it, this minimally invasive approach to dentistry yields the most natural-looking results."
