CANTON, MA--(Marketwired - Apr 29, 2013) - UNICOM Engineering, a leading provider of application platforms, deployment solutions and lifecycle support services for software technology developers and OEMs worldwide, today announced that Universal Electric (UE) selected UNICOM Engineering and the D-series platforms for their StarLine DC Solutions 380V DC Experience Center (SDSEC), a groundbreaking data center facility in Baltimore, MD showcasing how DC-powered servers can deliver computing power more efficiently by eliminating power conversion steps within the IT infrastructure and implementing end-to-end DC data processing.
As the demands on data centers increase, creating higher costs and power usage, the industry is looking for ways to increase efficiency and decrease operating costs. The concept of converting the power distribution configuration from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) within the data center is gaining increasing acceptance. DC data center technology is more energy-efficient and safer to use than traditional AC technology. By trimming power conversion losses, DC technology can reduce energy costs by 10 percent or more. DC systems have also proven to cut infrastructure and equipment costs by as much as 30 percent.
In outfitting the SDSEC, UNICOM Engineering and UE have created a user-friendly environment where visitors can experience the "green" attributes of DC power delivery firsthand. The data center is designed as a teaching tool enabling participants to better understand how groundbreaking technology from both companies, including UNICOM Engineering's 380V DC platforms that enable DC-powered data centers to require fewer components, dissipate less heat and significantly improve efficiency, and UE's STARLINE DC Solutions Chip2Grid™ solution that eliminates the need for remote power panels, Power Distribution Units (PDU) and the conversion of AC to DC power, can cut down on energy consumption while delivering greater reliability.
The SDSEC also complies with industry standards for efficiency outlined by the EMerge Alliance, an open industry association leading the rapid adoption of DC power through a set of standards creating hybrid AC/DC power models. The partnership between UNICOM Engineering and Universal Electric represents one of several such initiatives UNICOM Engineering is pursuing to address efficiency, density and cooling requirements that focus on conservation. As an EMerge Alliance member, UNICOM Engineering is focused on providing 380V DC powered-servers that meet industry standards for data center and telecommunications applications.
"As data centers continue to grow and evolve, we're working hard to develop solutions that allow for increased modularity and overall efficiencies," said Tim Martinson, division director at Universal Electric. "Partnering with UNICOM Engineering was a logical choice as its innovative DC platform dovetails seamlessly with UE's Chip2Grid™ technology. The SDSEC is a game changer in the space and represents the future in data center design."
"The culmination of our collaboration with Universal Electric is captured in the SDSEC, which will serve as an immense teaching tool allowing participants to see the benefits of DC power in action, and in one of the most demanding settings possible," said Jeff Hudgins, vice president of marketing at UNICOM Engineering. "We are excited to welcome visitors to the Experience Center in Baltimore and to expand interest and awareness to the important mission of organizations such as the EMerge Alliance, which are changing the playing field for the better in data center design."
Jeff Hudgins of UNICOM Engineering and Tim Martinson of Starline DC Solutions will also be presenting "The Shift to 380V DC in the Data Center: Why It Makes Sense" at this week's Data Center World 2013 conference on May 1 from 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in room Palm A.
