PORTLAND, Ore., May 19, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic in Portland, OR announced that the Portland veterinary hospital gives away free exams for pets that are adopted from the Oregon Humane Society or the Multnomah County Animal Services. The hospital is offering the free exams in order to encourage potential pet owners to adopt animals, rather than buying pets from a breeder or a puppy mill. Portland veterinarian Dr. Kenneth DeRemer, who runs the veterinary clinic, is a small animal vet with extensive experience providing wellness care, including vaccinations, spay and neuter, pet dental care, and pet surgery.
Portland veterinarian Dr. Kenneth DeRemer announced that Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic is providing free exam services for shelter animals adopted from local rescue groups. The discounted veterinary services are part of the animal clinic's commitment to supporting local rescue shelters and encouraging the adoption of shelter pets.
"Every dog and cat deserves to be part of a loving family," said Dr. DeRemer. "Sadly, our local Portland shelters are filled with many dogs and cats in search of a forever family. We want to encourage individuals who are thinking about adding a new pet to their family to adopt."
In order to encourage individuals to adopt pets, Dr. DeRemer is offering free wellness exams for pets that are adopted from the Oregon Humane Society or the Multnomah County Animal Services.
"We know that adding a new pet to a family can be expensive, especially with wellness exams and vaccinations," said Dr. DeRemer. "That's why we are offering discounted services for pet owners who choose to adopt dogs or cats from our local shelters."
Pets that are adopted from local shelters will receive a comprehensive wellness exam for free. The veterinarian will perform a complete physical and may also test for heartworm and other internal parasites. Deworming services are also available.
Dr. DeRemer recommends all pets receive the core vaccination series. These vaccines are an affordable way to protect dogs and cats against highly contagious illnesses, including parvo, distemper and rabies.
"A wellness exam and core vaccinations will give a newly adopted pet a healthy head start in life," said Dr. DeRemer. "Proactive, preventive care is the best way to keep dogs and cats healthy and active for years to come."
During the initial wellness exam, Dr. DeRemer will also answer any questions a pet owner may have about a pet's dietary requirements, obedience training or other pet care basics.
"It's natural for first-time pet owners to have questions about day-to-day care and pet foods," said Dr. DeRemer. "The free wellness exam is a great opportunity to answer these questions."
In addition to the wellness program, the Portland veterinary hospital also provides dental care, pet vaccinations and spay/neuter pet surgery.
