Environmentally-conscious author says "No Fracking Way" to current support of drill-baby-drill policies
Once you frack, you can't go back! Environmental activist and children's book author Patty Fayerweather Harlow is urging fellow environmentalists to protest hydraulic fracturing across the country, and that means demanding that the practice be banned before another community is forced to grapple with its deadly consequences. Currently, the New York State Department of Conservation (NYSDEC) is preparing an environmental impact statement that will determine the legality of hydraulic fracturing in New York. Pending this report, which was just extended on February 12th for further consideration, Harlow has launched a campaign to mobilize New Yorkers to unite against fracking and demand that Governor Cuomo let the science decide. Proven to cause severe environmental pollution, including contamination of ground water, risk to air quality, and surface contamination from spills and flowback, fracking not only compromises the environment, but the health of individuals who live in and around the areas where it is practiced. A united front is our only hope to force Governor Cuomo and other government officials to listen to the MANY, not the money---for once!
With so much at stake in these environmentally sensitive times, our planet's valuable resources cannot be subjected to a drill-baby-drill platform, nor can our pristine landscapes be preserved with dangerous pipelines of crude oil pumping through them. Harlow is determined to bring awareness to this cause and to see hydraulic fracturing banned in the United States.

Characterization of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage among Healthcare Workers (HCW) at a Tertiary Care Hospital: Carlos Guerra MD, Kerri Augustino, Amy Pearson, Andy Blake, John Christie, MD, PhD, Keith M. Ramsey, MD

Background: Healthcare workers (HCW) may be carriers of MRSA and a source of transmission to patients. Studies published to date have been limited in size, with few descriptions of the genotypes of the MRSA carried. The objectives were to determine the prevalence and genotypes of MRSA isolates from among groups of HCW.
Methods: In parallel with 100% universal surveillance of admitted patients, data was collected among HCW who were voluntary screened for MRSA via nasal swab between January 2007 and March 2009. DNA was extracted and purified prior to amplification using a DiversiLab Staphylococcus aureus DNA fingerprinting kit. Data were analyzed by logistic regression, and comparing binomial distributions between groups by occupation and age.
Results: Among 7894 HCWs, 3638 (46.1%) were tested (46.1%) with 4.9% positive. Among those in direct patient care, 2136-of-4640 (46.0%) were tested with 100-of-2136 positive (4.7%). Mean carriage (+ 95% C.I.) of MRSA by occupation were nurses (4.6+ C.I.), nurses aides (5.3+C.I. ), care partners (5.5+ CI ) operating room staff (6.2+ CI ) and housestaff (0.7+ CI ). By occupation, MRSA carriage was significantly lower among housestaff than care partners ( p= 0.035). MRSA carriage among the 51-64 yr group (6%) was significantly higher (p= 0.048) than the 31-50 yr (4.1+ C.I. ) and 18-30 yr (3.9+ C.I. ) groups. Genotyping among isolates from carriers revealed 78% were HA-MRSA (USA 100,200,800, Iberian), while 13% were CA-MRSA (USA 300,500) and 9% were no match.
Conclusions: Voluntary screening for MRSA revealed an overall MRSA carriage rate among HCW of 4.9%, with statistically significantly higher carriage rates among those HCW 51-64 yrs of age. 2. HCW in direct patient care carried HA-MRSA at a ratio of 6:1 compared with CA-MRSA. 3. Further studies are needed to determine the risk factors for carriage of MRSA among HCW, and the impact of decolonization on clinical care.

Dolphin deaths rise to record levels
As nitrogen levels rise, so too do dolphin deaths. By far the worst ocean pollutant, nitrogen originates from land use sources such as fertilization and wastewater run-off. Over time, nitrogen loading to coastal watersheds devastates the ecosystem and harms wildlife by causing algal blooms, eutrophication and ocean dead zones (hypoxia). Algal blooms deplete the marine environment of dissolved oxygen, suffocating marine life and leading to death and disease. Careless human actions are thereby killing dolphins, and only responsible human actions can save them!
Why save Indian River Lagoon?
Indian River Lagoon is a grouping of three lagoons: Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River, and Indian River, which stretch across 6 counties and 156 miles of Florida's Atlantic coast. Home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals, the Lagoon holds the distinction of being North America's most diverse estuary. In recent years, however, Indian River Lagoon has been granted a less desirable distinction: Thirty-five of its species are currently listed as threatened or endangered, more than any other estuary in North America. And as the Lagoon's inhabitants continue to suffer, so too do visitors of this natural wonder. The Lagoon is vulnerable to nitrogen loading because it is a shallow, enclosed waterway. The EPA has estimated that 3 million tons of nitrogen invade the Lagoon every year--1 million tons over its sustainable capacity. The campaign to save Indian River Lagoon is determined to prevent further damage to this sensitive eco-system and to protect what remains, while ensuring that every dolphin who smacks its final flipper on these still waters will send a ripple that will echo into eternity.
